Blood flow restriction at work. My thigh felt exhausted after just a few sets of calf raises, quad sets, and straight leg raises.

I know that my knee is objectively better. I KNOW it.

But there are days like today when everything hurts and it takes four days to recover from whatever challenge I encountered. I have forgotten what it’s like to not constantly think about how my knee feels. It’s exhausting.

It was the best. I haven’t done that stuff without knee pain in decades. My muscles will remind me of this for days, but it will have been worth it. #kneereplacement #physicaltherapy

Obstacle courses. Agility ladders. Lunges with that God-awful water-filled tube thingy. Pushing/pulling the sled. BOSU squats. Russian dead lifts. I’m probably forgetting something.

Oh, hubris. You are a conniving thing.

I foolishly told my PT to challenge me today. So she did.

My doctor gave me the “all clear” at my 6-week follow up today. ROM is beyond expectations. Sadly, my strength and endurance aren’t at a spot for me to be able to make the most of #aptacsm this year. I’m going to miss my physio friends a lot this weekend.

Yet another example of the cool stuff physios can do!

That’s a big ol’ “it depends.” As in, depends on the temp of the photo pre-editing. Some things lend themselves better to one or the other. Also depends on the amount and type of light in the shot. Incandescent bulbs tend to be warm. Fluorescents tend to be colder.

Didn’t think this would have been possible two weeks ago. Five weeks post TKA revision.

I am thankful for my colleagues, who supported me, mentored me, challenged me, and defended me. I wouldn’t be here without them.

Yesterday I was approved for contract renewal at my academic position. Sort of a halfway point to tenure. It has been such a stressful last three months (both in and outside of work) that I had a little breakdown at the start of my presentation. Everything just hit me.

Knee rehab update: it only took three (looooong) weeks, but I think my pain is finally getting better. I can go up stairs with a step-thru pattern. If I concentrate, I can walk without a Trendelenburg gait pattern. #progress #physicaltherapy #tka #tkarevision

A decent physio community too!

We are all just humans struggling to get through our days. Thank you, PT, for helping me get through mine.

While I’m blubbering on the treatment table, I’m also thinking “I wish my students could see how great my PT is handling this!” But at the same time, “thank God my students aren’t here.”

My PT, bless her, quickly recognized my state, directed me to a private treatment room, and gave me the space I needed. She was empathetic and non-judgmental and it was exactly what I needed.

I’m a physical therapist. I had pretty major knee surgery two weeks ago and have been going to an OP PT clinic.

My recovery has been rough. My pain is not well controlled and sleep has been rare. In today’s session, I broke down and cried.

I get asked a lot by physical therapists how they can get involved with their communities, and the LA fires have pointed out the importance of evacuation planning that considers the needs of people with disabilities.

Disability shouldn’t be a death sentence. That seems basic. Let’s start there.

Alas, I won’t be there this year. I had a TKA revision recently and will probably still be healing. All that walking may be a bit ambitious. Miss y’all.
