To correct the record:
The gay rights movement I was a part of in the 1980s and 90s was not aiming for ‘toleration’.
Mere acceptance was not enough.

i legit think it's because usually they know who "she" refers to, because there's usually just one woman character. They don't need to think about that at all, so it's weird to ask them to do that. Whereas they're used to doing it with the men, so they don't even think about it at all.

It's really funny that no one critiques books with tons of male characters as saying "it's hard to tell which pronouns belong to who" even though it's the exact same issue. I've only ever heard that complaint come up in regards to F/F stories.
