Martian leader shortly before the events of War Of The Worlds:

Should probably say before anyone goes hunting for the back issues that nothing interesting is done with this at all!

Oh it must be! I thought something was going on

There’s one unusual aspect which is some wild Tom Grindberg art on the Warlock issues, he seemed to be trying an experimental style fusing Liefeld anatomy and Mignola shadow. Glad I saw that! Otherwise a stuffed and mounted example of 90s event bloat. /end

Thor is a tricky guy to build a crossover around as his mythological underpinnings don’t always play well with others and he himself mostly just thumps people (especially here). With Starlin involved there’s a psychosexual angle with an angry female element of Thor’s personality causing the trouble

If you’re up for a story where 90s Thor dukes it out with a lot of Jim Starlin characters then this is the event for you. Or if you want to see Starlin and Ron Marz using every trick they can to stretch the crossover to its alotted parts.

#89 BLOOD AND THUNDER (Marvel, 1994)

Another one from the era when Marbel split its publishing division into 5 and demanded events from all of them. In this one Thor succumbs to Warrior’s Madness, a kind of Asgardian rabies, and fights people for 13 episodes until Odin stops it

He phrased it a little more delicately too

I'll be honest with you, people don't like Keir on the door but it's not over this Mandelson thing. They don't like him personally

Great news boss, this Mandelson stuff isn’t cutting through on the doorstep because they already think you’re a cunt

You’re saying he should never have been appointed and I agree with you,” Miliband told Sky News. “I steered well clear of Peter Mandelson when I became Labour leader in 2010.”

Asked what he thought about Mandelson’s initial appointment, he said: “That it could blow up, that it could go wrong … I had a conversation with David Lammy about it before the appointment, and I said I was worried about it … I think he was worried about it too.”

But Miliband said he was not asked directly what his views were of the appointment. “Maybe I wasn’t the person that people would necessarily ask. I think people knew my view on Peter Mandelson,” he added.

Miliband said he did not think it was a resigning matter for the prime minister. “No, I don’t think he should. Because I think if every time a prime minister made a mistake they resigned, we would shuttle through prime ministers like nobody’s business.

A picture of a majestic humpback whale leaping from the seas with the caption “humpback whales are forming super-groups”, rather than simply admire the wonder of nature I am making a poor quality music gag

Well, if you'd asked me to predict a tough Pop World Cup decision, Switzerland v Qatar might have been on the list but not for a good reason. Turns out they're both colossal bangers #PWC26

To avoid terrible politics we must instead aim for an era of bold and challenging culture that lives on in history as a moment of intense innovation, I suggest Germany in the 1920s

You can dislike a thing and find the people who like that thing annoying without trying to sell the maximal possible case why said thing is bad for everyone

17 hours ago 20 3 0 1

Yeah a lot of politics involves nostalgic wishcasting, that's for sure. Maybe in some technical psychoanalytic sense that is necessarily infantile!

17 hours ago 1 0 0 0

Yeah agreed, I don't think it has particularly deep effects beyond making franchise-holders money (and of course at least one franchise-holder is funnelling that money back into terrible politics but that's not what that guy was talking about)

"Star Wars and superheroes are baby-brained" - ok
"Politics now is also baby-brained" - is it tho?
"There is a causal relationship between these two things" - i'll need to see your workings on that one champ

18 hours ago 27 2 3 1

I think our current politics are as they are because the exercise of power and money-as-power has become completely separated from any consequences or levers of control, this is the case for people who are not particularly infantile as much as it is for people who obviously are

18 hours ago 33 3 3 0

I don't want to get into the "can grown ups like Star Wars" fight for the thousandth time, I think the original post was bad mostly because the idea our current politics are characterised by "infantile regression" is glib

Yes! Though one of my favourite bits in the Solar Cycle is where you finally get an outside perspective on Nessus and learn Severian has been actually downplaying its decrepitude because it's all he knows
