Neuroscientists on a field trip!
What to do when the lab is closed for heating updates and window repairs? Leave the flies, pipettes and cultures behind for some fossil hunting and fish&chips at the Yorkshire coast.

We're doing the same thing!! It's does make a massive difference in my experience.

Interactive Guide to Creating Your Lab Handbook So you want a lab handbook?Welcome! If you’re reading this, you probably want your lab to have a handbook. Perhaps you ended up here after hearing about how lab handbooks can improve group culture and help people do better research. Maybe you’re not sure about how to do it, or are daunted by the process; it’s a lot of work after all! We hope this resource will guide you through the process, so you can focus on actually creating your handbook, rather than worrying about how to do it.We made this resource based on our experiences working with multiple pilot lab groups in the University of York Biology Department. Through doing this, we tried to make it accessible to groups of different sizes, who work on different topics in a variety of ways. You don’t have to be a principal investigator (PI) or line manager yourself this resource is for anyone who wants to create a lab handbook with others in their group regardless of role, experience or career stage.

Co-creating handbooks in research teams resource - taking the worry out of the process for anyone who wants to create a lab handbook with others, regardless of their role, experience or career stage. Designed by Gina Vong, Dr Ines Hahn and Dr Alex Payne-Dwyer

Ha! πŸ˜… very interested in those inhibitors, which ones would you recommend and have people tested them in flies before?

1 month ago 0 0 1 0

Good point! We went with beta because sgg leans that way and we used beta in the mammalian+in vitro experiments. Didn't feel that we can make a statement about alpha. Would love to hear your overall thoughts - always up for chatting! I did not know you're a York alumni, very cool and small world! 😊

Great q!! That's what we're working on next atm - we think that is that it's active in the growth cone centre to allow MTs to explore, either inactivated at the membrane (via Akt) to promote or activated (via sema signalling) to block outgrowth

This work has been a long time coming and we were supported by amazing scientists making tackling GSK-3Ξ² complexity possible - thanks so much Andre, Marvin, Gareth, Lubna, Alex, Sanjai, Hayley and Antony!!

Images of fly primary neurons that express active or inactive GSK3beta stained for tubulin and a midel summarising how we think Shot and Tau microtubule binding is affected by low, optimal and high kinase activity.

"Your article has been published" πŸŽ‰ We found there's a sweet spot of GSK-3Ξ² activity required to keep axonal microtubules bundled in πŸͺ°πŸ€. Too much/little affect how Tau and Shot associate with microtubules leading to microtubules that loose bundling and resemble a bowl of cooked spaghetti 🍝

Since the start of the year I've been kicking off my mornings with an 'album of the day'. Today's pick: Puscifer's fantastic new album 'Normal Isn't'. Complex rock with goth and punk vibes, MJK and Carina's ethereal voices, excellent lyrics - highly recommend!

At a time when the UK should be capitalising on its global reputation as a great place to do science, this is an enormous own goal. I am so sorry for all those who jobs are going to be impacted.
