It's funny - I've been working on personal graphic novel projects in my freetime for the past few years, but I've shared almost none of that. 😅

My goal is to at least self-publish those by next years conventions! 🤞

I’m stubborn so I forced myself to make this work regardless of missing meals (not recommended).

I don’t think there’s one right way towards stability. But, you can’t hold yourself to the standards of others’ success. It’s easy to demotivate yourself by trying to replicate people you look up to.

Part of what makes this career so tough is that, at its core, we do this because it’s fun. But struggling isn’t fun. So, sometimes you need to do work that is ‘work’ - not just your passions, but that can also burn you out HARD! I think that’s something that ate away at me for a long time.

One thing that helped me financially was getting more of an online following. I noticed clients started including me in the marketing budget as well as the art budget & that really opened up new rates/opportunities.

I think comics are a different, more complicated, beast though.

I do illustration freelance full time & I think I only recently found the right balance. Maaaany years of overworking to get there, though. Now I charge more and honor “work hours” pretty strictly to give myself time to do personal work.

I could talk about this topic for waaayy too long tbh lol.

I've been obsessed with Dear Modern's videos lately, so I had to do a little painting about the birds & monkeys. If you know, you know!

I was planning on rewatching the original, but the two people who visited my booth heavily recommended to read the manga and draw inspiration from that.

It was my first convention, but definitely not my last. I want to do these much more regularly!
