The U.S. remains the only industrialized nation without a national paid parental leave policy. Estonia offers more than a year and a half of paid leave to new parents. Sweden provides 480 days of shared parental leave and Finland about 14 months. /end

The U.S. was a pioneer in labor union organization, but it soon lagged behind Western Europe. While many developed nations established centralized, government-funded leave systems after WWI, the U.S. has historically relied on a patchwork of private employer policies and state-level mandates. /8
