A tiktoker last week, breathlessly described The Count of Monte Cristo as "swashbuckling" and I knew she watched the Guy Ritchie movie and assumed it was the book. The best thing about reading the book is that I know that tiktoker is all hat no cattle. My thoughts: c2lem.com/books/BIP_/T...

The Teleportation Accident by Ned Beauman
πππ΅οΈββοΈ
A wildly farcical, sex-obsessed sciβfi noir about a tram-phobic set designer chasing a βnear missβ across continents as the holocaust burns in the background; hilarious for me, too odd for others.

πποΈRead this for bragging rights, so here I am bragging, but I do not have any profound insights into what this novel meant. But do know that you will need to read this book at least twice simply to comprehend.

The Magician of Tiger Castle by Louis Sachar
ββ οΈπ
A deeply flawed book that sabotages its own plot, resulting in a disappointing and unsatisfying reading experience. You can spend your time reading far better books or reply & tell me I am wrong.

vs being me, the jaded curmudgeon looking for a successor to it.
DCC is an amazing listen and I envy you having the fresh experience of it.
Anyway, the "real villain" here, is Amazon that wants to feed me HWFWM as the logical successor to DCC just because its available in their inventory. And since it was free then this is arguably a victimless crime. .... first world problems...
It might make a better read - just as DCC would lose a lot as a read and the only thing that would improve (maybe) would be the reader's comprehension of the complicated plot devices in the later books.
I am now past 3 hours, I think this is just like listening to wallpaper paste and the RPG/virtual reality is clunky - there plenty of good books to model after -- Snow Crash, Ready Player One, etal. and yet this seems stapled together so far. No this is not for me.

Dissolution by Nicholas Binge
π§πππ°οΈ (memory, sci-fi tech, time loops, thriller)
A twisty, high-concept thriller about memory, love, and time, with inventive sci-fi devices and a satisfying, surprising resolution.

roger that
Sure.
I sound like such a negative nelly. It's not the platform's fault. I am not a prolific poster and naturally, high volume posters deserve more attention. I am just hoping my idiosyncratic, obscure, poorly visited, amateur blog might get a few more hits based my occasional bsky book reviews.
In conclusion, thank you again, and, I have been on bsky for a year, but literally, this is the most useful, pleasant interaction I have had on this thing.
Cool now I have a whole "tasting menu".
And its not like DCC is the be all and end all: I have enjoyed it but amazon is riding their cash cow all the way to the abattoir when they ought to put it out to pasture. Everything gets old after awhile (... Magic of Xanth anyone?)
I still haven't given it 3 hours. : - ). The tiktok thread I added here suggested "Discount Dan .. Bargains", "Mayor of Noobtown", "Tower of Jack", "Buymort". Anything you can add to the list would be great.
I mean, I want this book to be good and judging from TikTok a shit ton of people think it is good. I guess Iβm gonna give it three hours because to repeat myself yeah it was free.
#booksky #litrpg I am more than an hour into "He Who Fights With Monsters", which Amazon seems to be positioning as a successor to Dungeon Crawler Carl, yet so far, not a whiff of anything funny. What gives? How much runway does this story need? At least it was free....
damn I'm good

The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones
π©Έπ§ββοΈππͺΆ
A unique vampire story set in 1912 Montana, exploring colonial brutality and personal vengeance, the ending was fun and rescues a slow middle plot.

My take on Katabasis: c2lem.com/books/Kataba...
Judging from your icon picture there is low head swellage potential so its safe for me to say, but ya: The Peripheral needs to return.
That's the correct answer. Show her what she has won!
Today I start reading The Count of Monte Cristo. I will read chapters 1 and 2. This per the original serialization of the novel.

Psst anyone on here. Does Duolingo just not care about Korean? This is a hangul lesson and I am pretty sure its confusing 's' with 'j'.
The one by Kelly Link β I havenβt read *that* one tho.
