The moment your justification includes “for the good of society,” it should be handled by non-profit entities like federal, state or local governments. That includes incarceration, healthcare, security, and utilities. Corporations have proven far too corrupt to be trusted with social necessities.

BTW… 10,000 hours was the length of the apprenticeship. Most shops had 55 hour workweeks. So just shy of four years with vacations thrown in.

I did my tool and die maker’s apprenticeship back in the early seventies, and attendance records at night school, wage records and final exams were required. The tool and die makers association tracked school and employment records. I didn’t have to keep personal records.

The fallacy in their reasoning is that if they paid their workers wages comparable to the value they add, workers would be paying more taxes and be a higher percentage of the total income taxes paid each year.
