I love this country, the promise it held, including for the rest of the world. But because I’m patriotic enough to criticize my government for trampling on its own ideals (which is my right!) my citizenship may be stripped. Those like me have no illusions about this. We’ve known this is their goal.

But the violence he endured last month in Minnesota while being detained is seared into his battered brain. He remembers Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents pulling him from a friend’s car on Jan. 8 outside a St. Paul shopping center and throwing him to the ground, handcuffing him, then punching him and striking his head with a steel baton. He remembers being dragged into an SUV and taken to a detention facility, where he said he was beaten again. He also remembers the emergency room and the intense pain from eight skull fractures and five life-threatening brain hemorrhages.

ICE told nurses this Minneapolis man “purposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall.”

What actually happened is that they pulled him from a car, beat him so viciously with a steel baton that he had 8 skull fractures, 5 life-threatening brain hemorrhages, and couldn’t remember he had a daughter.

Many of us were radicalized long before any of this ICE bullshit, often by watching our patients suffer in the hands of corporate "healthcare." We wrestle daily with wild moral distress and still show up to save your life. The murder of Alex Pretti is fuel on an already raging fire.

Do not test us.

You and your wife drop your 6-year-old off at school. You just moved here. You see ICE terrorizing your new neighbors. You film them, as is your legal right. Your wife complies with orders. She is then shot in the head. You still have to pick up your child later today.
