What does a pro-worker application of AI look like in practice?
Co-director @davidautor.bsky.social describes the Electrician's Assistant tool developed by Schneider Electric. The AI provides real-time field support to electricians and electrical engineers, making their expertise more effective.

What is the definition of "pro-worker AI"? Co-director @dacemoglumit.bsky.social explains: pro-worker AI creates new, complementary tasks for workers to do, rather than purely automating tasks.
On The Good Fight podcast, @davidautor.bsky.social and Yascha Mounk discuss what lessons the US failed to learn from the China trade shock, how AI will reshape the job market, and more.

Co-director @simonhrjohnson.bsky.social & others submitted an Amicus Brief to the Supreme Court.
The brief argues that US companies should be liable if their technology is used to surveil workers or suppress wages in ways that violate human rights.

(7/) These findings highlight the importance of new work in counteracting job displacement from automation. New work not only creates new jobs, but these jobs tend to require specialized expertise and pay higher wages.
(6/) 💡 New work can be traced back to specific places and times. Demand shocks such as public investment and technological change shape the new expertise that emerges.
(5/) 📉 The “newer” the new work, the higher the wage premium. “Older” new work commands less of a premium as more people acquire relevant expertise.
(4/) 💵 Workers earn higher wages in new work, reflecting the value of their scarce, specialized expertise.
(3/) 🎓 New work attracts younger workers and workers with more education.
(2/) A new paper by co-director @davidautor.bsky.social, Caroline Chin, affiliate Anna Salomons, and Bryan Seegmiller finds that new work differs systematically from more jobs in existing occupations.
(1/) At least 18% of US workers today are employed in jobs that didn't exist before 1970. But “new work” is not the only way for new jobs to emerge – jobs are also created when an existing occupation expands. How do these jobs in new work compare with more jobs in existing work? 🧵
What happened to US workers when China joined the WTO, and how have these workers fared since? How should policymakers respond?
