Dr Ting Xia
So very proud that Dr Ting Xia and Dr Tina Lam PhD at the @monashaddiction.bsky.social were awarded an NHMRC Ideas Grant, leading work 'Transforming opioid poisoning surveillance through novel technologies'. I can't wait to see this project come to life! So happy to see big wins for this team.
Yes, its me talking about naloxone again! Know folks who take unregulated drug? The best time to learn about naloxone is now. Have naloxone? Do you have it on you? Check out this article in the ABC and share with anyone who might find it useful. @monashaddiction.bsky.social
Fantastic!
Falsified pharmaceutical opioids that look like regular oxycodone pills found to contain strong opioids has now been reported in many countries... we need drug checking and harm reduction, and we also need to make sure that peoplewho need prescription opioids can access them through medical channels
IRELAND’S FIRST EVER medically supervised drug injection facility (MSIF) is set to open in Dublin in December, according to the charity overseeing the service.#harmreduction saves lives. www.thejournal.ie/supervised-d...
Hello in different langauges
Well hello, everyone! it seems like a good time to be over here. Keen to follow people who are interested in reducing drug related harm including harm reduction and treatment related related research. Hit me up!
Some good news to finish the year. It was just announced that I was lucky enough to receive 5-years NHMRC Investigator Grant funding to continue my work on preventing opioid-related mortality. Bring on 2024! Can't wait to start this work!
It seems hard to believe that in 2023 we are struggling with basic #naloxone supply in Melbourne, Australia. There are no legal barriers, yet we have a lack of stock and complicated access systems (despite the requirement for a prescription being removed in 2016)... progress is so painfully slow
This! 👇 But hoping this time round to somehow do something/different better - already finding new content and liking the vibe
Surround yourself with people who fight for you in rooms you aren't in.
Choose your supervisors carefully. #AcademicSky
I'm proud to represent MARC, one of the 77 organisations that have supported this call for drug checking in Victoria, Australia, aligning with 4 Victorian coronial findings. This will save lives and provide information on emerging harmful substances prior to consumption. See: bit.ly/3FkXDlp
*New research* from our group - did more people start #opioid agonist #treatment following voluntary or mandatory prescription drug monitoring program #PDMP implementation? We didn't find any change probably for a whole range of reasons, including potentially the lack of access to these treatments.
So proud to share our first paper examining the role of #xylazine in the drug supply! This work is the definition of a team effort! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
The spectre of #fentanyl is looming large in #Australia. In this piece we warn of the potentially devastating impact on public health, including an unprecedented surge in overdose deaths.

Our new article in BMJ argues anti-drug stigma is undermining UK's response to drug-related harms - including implementation of drug consumption rooms - and action is needed in the wake of rising overdose deaths.
