Yes! I’m learning. People think because we got our daughter at birth that we get to shape her. Nope. There was trauma. The book Primal Wound helped me understand.

Thank you for sharing this. My brothers were adopted. It was a surprise to me to learn how they felt. One said he felt like a puzzle piece that didn’t quite fit. I’m an adoptive parent. We are in counseling to help with all the emotional trauma.

It seems like a basic right, doesn’t it? Luckily, due to medical advancements, many adoptees are able to locate family members by using DNA testing. As you can imagine that’s very stressful for adoptees because they don’t know how the families are going to feel about them.

Adoptees often feel that something was wrong with them, and their mothers gave them away. Adoptee have trouble with attachment as well as relationships.

100% even children who are adopted as newborns have emotional memory. They are traumatized. In the book primal wound, the author speaks of how a mother and child’s bond is vital. Newborn babies know their mothers smell and voice. When they are put with strangers, it affects their development.

Right! Adoptees already feel like their history is erased. When they are another race, they feel even more isolated. They tend to feel like they do not fit in. Many times white families try to assimilate other races into that white culture.

Adoptees speak of being the only people of color in their schools as well as living in households that don’t embrace their culture. This can manifest into feelings of isolation on top of abandonment issues.

You nailed it! Unfortunately, Black mothers have disproportionately have had their children removed. For many reasons, this is traumatic. White families disproportionately become adoptive parents. Therefore children of Black and brown cultures are expected to assimilate into a white society.

Q3: Statistically, transracial adoptees tend to have additional struggles compared to same race adoptees. Why might that be the case?

It’s a tough one. I think as humans we should have a right to know our genetic history. Many adoptees yearn to understand why their mom gave them up. DNA research companies have been a huge help in the process of locating biological families.

Q2: The birth certificates of adoptees are usually sealed, hiding the identity of birth families. Some adoptees have concerns about laws that hinder their knowledge. There are only 9 states that allow this if a judge deems it necessary usually for health history. Thoughts?

It was surprising to me. I have 2 brothers who were adopted. I only learned after adopting our girls and doing some research.

Q1: Data shows adoptees are more likely to suffer from depression and addiction. Adoptees are also more likely to have suicidal ideation. Is this surprising to you? Any thoughts about why?

Welcome to my AEA ACT EdChat. Today’s topic is adoption awareness. Although adoption has long been seen as a blessed event, there is new research, testimonials and data to indicate adoption is traumatic for children. Today’s discussion will be about the real effects of adoption in children. #myAEA
