This is exactly what we have to convince parents of during open days. History isn't just learning dates and facts. It's learning how to sift information and write a convincing argument.
The number one reason authoritarian leadership gains support is economic pain. If Mark Carney and the Liberals cannot do their part for this, and draw clear lines between their role and Provincial leadership, it won’t bode well for the next one.
Celebrate, yes. Dig deeper, always.

Fact-checking, engaging in free-and-rational thought, and most of all, getting our hands dirty in working out housing and military policy.
Now the real work begins. The work of ensuring that we, unlike too many dems down south from 2021-2024, don’t close our eyes to the reality of hard-right strategy.
Why that should be the vehicle to seemingly unlimited power within their regime, and why citizens continue to fall for these tactics today, is a deeper study than this post.
But it’s worth keeping in mind, on the eve of our election.

blame shifting onto immigrants, conspiracies, claiming the wealthy are all evil - though becoming wealthy becomes one of their goals, fighting against intellectuals, encouraging violence, and saying they care deeply about the poor.
It’s an interesting thing, populist politics. I don’t know why, but every dictator I have read up on from the early 20th century up all began with populist politics.
They do tend to share similarities, though not always identical:
I’m loving Chinese manufacturers airing luxury brand’s dirty laundry on TikTok.

I’m not giving up, but it’s difficult, to say the least, to watch those you know and love falling into the trap.
Is it just me, or does it feel like the misinformation side is winning this war for minds?
To be clear about my context, misinformation is being spawned in massive quantities by the Right. They don’t have to fact-check, so they just hit Post or “Go ahead and publish”. Again and again and again.
They would vote for anyone. Anyone. Who they believe will increase their influence. All under the guise of Jesus loving us, but really, for the desire to control the narrative, which they call “righteousness”.
I am not anti-Church. But I most certainly am against hypocrisy.
I have never seen such an astounding display of “ignorance is bliss” in my memory, as what the Canadian Church is displaying in regards to voting for Poilievre.
The bitter irony is that, “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.”
As someone from that background, it bothers me deeply.
OK. Agreed, but this has been true for decades. It’s not computers or AI. It’s a long-standing issue accelerated by social media. Even in the 90’s we saw Americans able to be convinced in person that Canadians live in igloos year-round. That’s old-fashioned lack of education…not “computers”.
This is sadly absolutely the truth. However, the lost only know how to dig into their beliefs deeper. And the harder you push, the more reality you demonstrably prove, the harder they fight against it. Their choice is fear, doubt, and disbelief, and you cannot force them to change their mind.

(Apparently I can’t edit my grammatical error after posting.)
Republicans have been planning this coup for years…it won’t turn around overnight, or after a single protest, no matter how large.
Plan. Implement. Hope. Community.
Talk to your kids without it being just a rant, find like-minded souls whenever possible.
This can be turned around. The rule of law can be restored, but it’s going to take a LOT of work, and a lot of community.
Remember: it’s going to get worse before it gets better. Dig in for the long hall.
Don’t engage with the lost. They won’t change even when the world is crumbling around them: they only understand how to blame.
Do engage with those on the fence, and those who don’t hate, even when you don’t agree on everything.
Educate without preaching, research, do your homework on reality.
Y’all need to organize these protests daily. Not one and done, “Oh look, we stood up…now what?”
Daily.
Every single day call your representatives. Keep people on the streets, stop buying all you can related to your wannabe dictators’ empires, plan, plan, plan and enact those plans. #standup
ELON MUSK: "Weeeeeeee! Weeeeeeee! Look at me prance and jump!!!!! Here's a check for your election!!!!"
WISCONSIN: "Bugger off, you annoying dork."
And people, who are often unable to research on their own, or remember anything further back than a few paycheques, fell for it. Again.
I think your media channels, especially the large ones trump labelled as “fake news” again and again from 2016-2020, are largely complicit here. They sanewashed what he said repeatedly in 2024, making it seem like he wasn’t serious.
I think the biggest takeaway I got here was to protect your mind, in part in community, and in part by realizing that it’s going to get worse before it gets better.
The other side of this, which cannot be overstated, is that it only gets better with tremendous work and even personal sacrifice.
If we tax billionaires out of existence we run the serious risk of a healthy middle class & elections decided by voters, not fascist oligarchs.
Do we really want to give up 800 billionaires for universal healthcare, free college, & climate justice?
No Way.
Sincerely,

To be explicitly clear—Trump's MAGA regime in 2025 USA deleting digital records of Black & brown people is the modern version of Hitler's Nazi regime burning books in 1933 Germany.
This isn't hyperbole. It is reality. Anyone who doesn't see that is either woefully naive or consciously complicit.
