The Auto(nomous) Body Shop is a Pittsburgh-based mobile mutual aid resource supporting bodily autonomy and community care. Since 2023, they have earned the trust of Pennsylvanians, fielding requests for supplies and financial assistance to help break down any barriers to reproductive healthcare. The need for these services has grown exponentially. In response, the Auto(nomous) Body Shop is launching a new program to meet this moment: Introducing the Caravan Fund! Co-directed by a group of experienced clinic workers and doulas, this community-oriented fund exists to remove financial and logistical barriers to those seeking reproductive health care. Communities of color, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and those facing economic hardship are most impacted by health care inequities, and this program aims to build power together to overcome that. What does this look like in practice? The Caravan Fund will offer wrap-around care and comprehensive services beyond what the current abortion funds provide. This fund will support Pennsylvanians wherever they obtain services, even if they go to a hospital or need to travel out of state. Other offerings include supplemental and gap funding for appointment or telehealth costs, gas money to get there, doula support, housing for overnight and multi-day procedures, abortion care kits, childcare during the appointment, and more.
