A ★★ review of One Battle After Another (2025) Certainly no Inherent Vice, this film is only very very loosely “inspired by” Pynchon’s novel Vineland. I loved that book, as well as Paul Thomas Andersons’s adaptation of Inherent Vice, but here he s...

One Battle After Another blindly fulfills the dystopian prophecy of the book it's based on, which is kind of a bummer, man. boxd.it/bbphgn

I Do An Easily Replaced Job For A Living The death of advertising has been heralded for at least the two decades I’ve worked in it.

Practitioners are almost always left out of "task reductions" in the AI discourse. Most people who do anything will look at the way technologists caricature their practice and say, "that's not what I do at all".

This from a well established copywriter: substack.com/home/post/p-...

alternatively, we just let all the quants and normies get entranced by LLMs for 100 years and do lots of fun things without them. but like, i guess we should do our jobs when duty calls, especially since obviously this new toy, just like the one before it (web 2.0) literally eats children, not cool

i think one of the great services humanists can do is find fail cases that people can try themselves to "feel the edge of the system" ways that people can come to a more visceral and heuristic stance towards the LLMs

it's the best way i've found to really feel under the hood: gpt organizes and stylizes your thoughts back nicely, and can rope in distant, extracted forks that can be provocative, but it *totally is not following your point* none of the inner relations or logic of your position survive the grok

The best way I've found to disillusion yourself of GPTs powers is: have a complex debate and ask it to counter your view. At end, ask it to summarize your view. GPT fails, miserably. It isn't following ur reasoning, it just parrots it back + ouija's in other loosely related language chunkies.

GPT is like the guy at the party who takes a super insightful little thing you say and paraphrases it 10x to the entire room, pedantically formalizing all the obvious grammatical relations, and trumpeting in some zippy new terms from a champagne-stained thesaurus.

One of the crazy assumptions of the AI-assisted language modeling paradigm is that it believes language still functions when you decouple sincerity conditions from speech acts.

So cool how you can't go to a local rock show without giving some weird other company your: credit card number, phone number, email, and installing an app that uses your location, can access your contacts and jump into your face at any moment in the future. Make sense.

It's a fine line between "infographic" and meme, and one that, curiously, falls neatly upon party lines. Still only one kind of dumb out there tho!

Google Is Burying the Web Alive AI, chatbots, and the end of the link economy.

Possibly the biggest heist in history, but one that maybe was inevitable in the age of infinite ambient knowledge. I suppose the only question is how far an AI interface for the internet could be open-sourced and decoupled from corporate control. nymag.com/intelligence...
