Hang in there, friends. It's going to be tough, I know that. I have a feeling things will get a lot worse before they get better. But it's only over if we give up. Keep the hope alive, whatever it takes. Stay strong!

Deeper in the Game From geekdom to freedom

Seeing how scattered RPG design/theory stuff is these days, I'm all the more glad I've chosen to put all my blog stuff up for free.

I had considered gating paid stuff on Patreon but a) that'd require regular posting and b) god why add another layer?

I'm down, if you have time 😎

Sounds maybe obvious but I like to consider how that factors into how I view my own life and the lives around me. "As above, so below" and all that. I could look at someone's work and tell whether or not they went to school and considered how my own work tells on myself, as well

Not everybody is good with people, especially in the electrical world. But I digress. His combination of backgrounds and skills makes him an entirely different candidate than the guy that came into the trade straight from high school, or a 45 year former maintenance guy

"Electrician" is broad enough that it covers a lot of specialties, and accommodates a lot of different combinations of skills. If you're good with people, you can do well working residential, where you need soft skills as well as technical knowledge.

I used to tell my apprentices all the time "Everything you learned at your last job, whatever it was, is useful." (I am an electrician by day.) I had a guy who used to be a server. I told him he developed important customer service skills. That's huge for a sparky!

Even if I reproduced the brush strokes of Rembrandt, or whoever else, my work would be distinct. I am using different paints, my hands are shaped differently, the way I hold the brush is different, my eyes are different, my conceptions about the world are different

This is why it's so hard for me to share anything, especially online. I am inviting you inside of my mind; it feels like you could work backwards from stories about wizards and discover my secrets, or catch a glimpse of who I am when I am writing; it's so intimate, isn't it?

Your every memory and opinion and experience colors your art deeply. It is unique to you, like your fingerprints or a brain scan

It's probably impossible to really separate an artist from their art

This Facebook post from Perry Miniatures is excellent. They've managed to acquire a set of Peter Cushing's wargame campaign notes. Some brilliant stuff in here (includes a note to himself to make a standard for Oliver Reed!)
