There are currently 6 permanent full time history jobs in the whole UK. 500+ PhDs being produced a year - not all of whom will want to pursue an academic year but likely most, and of course years will stack up onto each other. What a sector.

The main reason I play stealth in games is to delight in the fantasy of having enough hip flexibility to repeatedly walk in a crouched position.

A picture of a rather dilapidated copy of "The picture of Dorian Gray" There is visible water damage to the cover and the plastic cover is yellowing. Obviously, not evident from the picture but there is a truly foul musty smell emanating from it!

Last week, a gentleman returned this rather dilapidated copy of this famous book to us after 50 years. He had found it in his attic!
Presumably this means there is a pristine copy somewhere in our libraries....

Just FYI, there is a tiny indie bookshop in Afflecks Palace in MCR that ONLY sells fantasy (and a tiny bit of horror). Not even SF. Bugbear Books - check them out if you're in the area. I was very well behaved because I was already broke but I got a copy of The Fox Wife which looks great.
Pls share?

Disabled people are facing discrimination through a combination of:

- An inadequate social security system
- An unaffordable and inaccessible housing market
- The disability employment and pay gap

📉 Reducing economic insecurity must involve tackling these systemic issues.

In the UK we call them lifts but in the US they call them elevators, because we’re raised differently.

Interesting world for those of us who’ve criticised structures that only value certain types of knowledge.
“We shouldn’t only consider professional qualifications as expertise!”
“Down with all experts!!”
“Wait no“

“It’s not just a lying plagiarism machine, it’s a *sycophantic* lying plagiarism machine!” is somehow the sell 😭

Have only just learned the phrase ‘competency porn’ and gosh that sums up so many sins of our current era.

My dad got scared by “don’t leave family with high funeral costs” adverts and got a plan which was £4k. But it didn’t cover burial fee, the special box they put ashes in, the change of ownership for the grave etc etc and we’ve spent almost that much again. Dying sure is lucrative, for somebody.

And you know what, some internal report that’s fine, but these same models are now popping up ahead of actual written information to shove their version of health advice or legal advice at people who search with barely any disclaimers and it’s not ok.

I actually really appreciate seeing the disclaimer and the effort made to suggest how it should affect interpretation. But why are we even doing this if we are sacrificing accuracy.

If I can’t do any of those things, what’s the point of it? It’s just produced more words into a system than before and added a layer of “lol maybe who can say”. im so tired

Just opened a report and it has a disclaimer that it was generated by ChatGPT and has been checked, but you should mentally start every sentence with “It seems that…”

How does this save me time. How does this share information. How does this help me access material I can trust and so can act on.

I think some of the aggressive enthusiasm about AI is exactly because people were caught unawares by the impact of a lot of digital and don’t want to make the mistake again. Colleagues who told me social media was a flash in the pan now doing the “we must be ready for AI It’s inevitable”

I remember throwing a book across the room when the female characters were asked to leave the group because it was time for important decisions to be made about how to tackle the alien threat. Then I picked it up again and checked it over because it was a library book and I’m not a hooligan.

Genuinely it got ridiculous how often a story would lead to “well each man must take twelve women as wives to repopulate the earth” with some half arsed description of this being a difficult but necessary reality rather than just a male author getting the horn.

I’ve always loved sci-fi and fantasy but so many both classic and modern books were full of macho tropes and barely written women. It’s been gorgeous to see the genre get so much richer with feminist takes and diverse characters. So of course that expansion gets seen as “Bad books neglect the menz“

I’ve got a Kobo and it’s pretty decent, plus it allows import from other vendors and with library integration!

Aaron Swartz was hounded and persecuted by overzealous prosecutors for a mass JSTOR download until he committed suicide.

Sam Altman says that he deserves to violate copyright law in perpetuity because otherwise he can't make a fortune from a large language model.

We are in the wrong timeline.
