Constructed this storage rack using mostly salvaged materials. Only had to buy one 2'x4' section of plywood. Will hold our soap fragrances. #BehindTheScenes #SpringBreakUpgrades
Thirteen days after we started the aeroponic cloners, we've got healthy roots on the swamp milkweed cuttings! #WNHSindoorGardens #WNHSoutdoorGardens
Had a great time in Arizona visiting my parents. Shipped 82 lbs of DIY chemistry lab supplies to Ohio. Cut, drilled, and ready for sanding! #BrackenFamilyFun #SpringBreakUpgrades
Made two trips to the hardware store to kick off our first official day of spring break! #SpringBreakUpgrades
Hydroponic systems are making good progress. Marigolds, Ferris Wheel, and green beans. #WNHSindoorGardens
Gene Hackman. An incredible life…
It's great when new experiments give us terrific data. It's even more rewarding when we overcome some initial failures. "Figuring it out" never gets old!!! #TheJourneyIsEverything #FromIdea2Reality #StillHavingFunInYear31
First snow day of the school year. Made a quick afternoon trip to the school to work on a new experiment. #AlwaysMore2Explore
Second semester starts tomorrow! Fired up & ready to go! #JourneyContinues

Kicked off the new year by discovering water under our kitchen sink. Found source of the leak. Quick phone call to my Dad, $6 trip to Lowes, and we are dry! #LittleVictories #BrackenFamilyFun
Our district hired an outside contractor to recharge the acid neutralizing pits in our science dept. Fresh limestone for second semester! #BehindTheScenes
Absolutely! Had the chance to talk with a former student in had in 1997. Hadn't seen her since she graduated in 2000! #GreatMemories
Thanks to everyone who stopped by our Chem Gems booth at today's craft show at Westerville South. Always great to share our story! #ChemGems
"How does the pH change during a titration?" Vernier's GoDirect pH sensors allowed my students to see the curve before we discuss it. #ExperienceBeforeExplanation
Given 5 "unknown" solutions, which are buffers? Which solution has the highest buffer capacity? #CountingDrops2SeeApHChange
I had each set of lab partners add one squirt of each known solution in the well plates according to the paper template. Our school lacks windows, so lights off is pitch black. Fume hood and ViewSonic display screen were indirect light for students.
We tested a number of different solutions. Our best results were with:
1 M NaNO3
1 M KNO3
2 M LiCl
2 M CaCl2
2 M SrCl2
1.2 M BaCl2
1 M CuSO4
Another fun twist is giving each student two unlabeled solutions. I add blue food coloring to make them all look like copper solution. #FunTimes4Everyone
Flame tests! Switched from test tubes & nichrome wires to 12-well plates & Q-tips. Excellent results. No more labeling test tubes, need 3 mL of each solution per lab station.
Love this. What % of isopropyl alcohol are you using? 70%, 91%, or 99%.
With frosty weather approaching Central Ohio later this week, it was time to cover our 15,000 carrots. #WNHSgardens
Triple indicators acid-base lab had my students thinking!!! Their pH calculations really mattered today! Calcs & logical reasoning in action. #LoveMyJobInYear31
Happy to be here. Love to be a part of it.
Our carrots are starting to pop in the WNHS gardens!
