We’re aware of a recent increase in automated spam and account compromises on @bsky.app. We’re actively removing violating content, banning violating users, and working to restore impacted accounts to their rightful owners.

Both issues are now resolved. Automated rules are re-enabled, and systems are operating normally. We’re reviewing additional safeguards to reduce the risk of similar issues in the future. 5/5

The issue stemmed from a connector between our moderation tool and automation system. After a restart, it failed to resume from the correct point and replayed past events - as far back as 2024. 4/5

Once confirmed, we disabled the affected automated rules and began a root cause analysis. Engineering fixed the issue, and we removed all incorrect labels within two hours from detection. No accounts were suspended or taken down due to this error. 3/5

A system failure caused older moderation events to be reprocessed as if they were new. This triggered account-level review labels, even though no recent activity had occurred. We identified this after investigating a user report. 2/5

Incident report: Earlier this week, our automated moderation system incorrectly labeled ~32,000 accounts as requiring moderator review. Here’s what happened, what we fixed, and the current status. 1/5

An error caused a large number of accounts to be incorrectly "marked for review" by our automated system. This tool is normally used to rapidly respond to mass harassment and spam campaigns. We have removed the incorrect labels and will publish an incident report in the coming days.

We apologize for the brief suspension of @dril.bsky.social. While our automoderation tool correctly identified that he 'knew too much,' we regret the error.

For each label, you can choose whether content is shown, shown with a warning, or hidden by default.

To turn on graphic content, you’d first have to enable adult content. There are additional settings in the Bluesky Moderation Service for advanced labels. 2/2

If you want to change Bluesky’s default moderation settings, go to your moderation settings on the web - bsky.app/moderation. Apple limits adult-content controls inside iOS apps, so you won’t see those options on the iPhone app itself. 1/2

When we detect a new match to these fingerprints, our moderators review and block the content before it appears online. You can create hashes directly through StopNCII.org. Alternatively - report NCII through our in-app reporting under Adult Content > Non-Consensual Intimate Imagery. 3/4

How it works: StopNCII.org uses privacy-preserving technology to create digital "fingerprints" of your intimate content directly on your device. Your images never leave your device, but the fingerprints are shared with participating platforms like Meta, TikTok, and now Bluesky. 2/4

We're announcing a new partnership with StopNCII.org to prevent non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII) from spreading on Bluesky. While NCII hasn't been frequent on our platform, these incidents are devastating for victims and preventing them is a top safety priority. 1/4

CORRECTION: The post was made on Oct 10. Due to a backlog in cases, our mod team didn’t review and take action until Nov 11, which is when we engaged with the account owner about the reason for suspension.
