If there was anything I'd learned from rehearsals, it was that you got to do a thing over again if you knew you could do it better. "Awkward angle" I said. "Here. Maybe..." I let myself fall onto my back, on the mattress, and waited to see what Vai would do. Politely ignore me and look up at the fireworks? Lean down for a perfunctory kiss and then pull back to watch the fireworks? Those seemed the likeliest options. I was wrong on both. Vai pounced. Their torso slanted across mine, forearms framing my shoulders. They took my face in both hands and kissed me like they had no intention of stopping anytime in the next half hour. I hardly need to say I was up for it. Though I laughed in surprise for a sec-ond, against Vai's mouth, this was not a comedy kiss, a caricature of passion. Vai kissed like a lover from a drama. So I shifted to sincerity too. My pretenses fell away, and I kissed Vai with all the upwelling feelings they had sparked in me these past five months. Admi-ration. Friendship. Fondness. Desire. Love. I wound my arms around their back, sliding a hand up into their sleek hair. Tilting my face for a deeper fit, I kissed Vai like I was drinking them in, reveling in soft lips and lean muscles and the weight of their body on me. Fireworks whistled and burst, light flaring through my closed eyelids.

By linguistics standards they don‘t count—I’m not a coder, but I have the impression they can’t do what human languages do, like discuss abstract or absurd ideas, along with not really being designed for communication directly with humans. But they’re languages by the standards of some other fields!
I studied linguistics in grad school, and ever since, it‘s blown people’s minds when I’ve told them that, as linguistics sees it, spoken or signed languages are the only things that count as languages. Writing is just an interpretation of language. And nearly always an incomplete one!
I know everything is on fire right now but we have to call about this, we’re already calling about everything else, just add it to the pile. The grief I feel rn is indescribable but to them it’s just any given weekday.
