A butterfly catching sunlight on a sprig of dark green gorse. Its wings are closed, to show a pastel green hind wing fringed with pale brown and its fore wing of pale green grading into pale brown. The wing edges are feathered conveying a soft brush effect. It has spotted antennae.

My first ever Green Hairstreak - an enchanting insect flitting about with Brimstone, Orange-tip & Holly Blue in the forest glades at Cranwich yesterday.

How many swallows make summer? No idea, either. But here’s two flavours of swallow prominent from the Norwich garden moth trap. Lesser on the left; Notlesser on the right

Hey, #Romancelandia, today is National Librarian Day in the U.S.

Can we show some love to Julia (former library assistant) and help her finishing raising what she needs? Every little bit counts (as does sharing her post 👇🏽)

Thank you!

I gave a talk on Friday about the geological evolution of Mousehold to Thorpe History Group. An astonishing 78 people came! Age cohort: mostly over 50: clearly people able to tear themselves from home & TV & screens, to socialise and help build convivial, local society.

This is a watercolour showing an attractive, undulating open heathland landscape with a sandy road snaking across it and severa cattle and people walking on it. A man and woman are standing nearby on the left. The clouded sky is looking a bit patchy.

Mousehold Heath - how many cities contain such a wonderful wildspace within their boundaries?

You wrote a novel using AI? Cool. It's like that time I ran a marathon using a Ford Focus.

Mary Burchell - Wikipedia

Or the classic example of Mary Burchell/Ida Cook, who used her Mills and Boon royalties to travel to Germany in the 30s posing as a loony elder opera fan and helped Jewish families smuggle assets out so they could flee safely? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Bu...

Ouch. Wish I'd done that. Instead I fell in slow motion and landed on my face. I'm an oaf who had just got new varifocals. Considering learning how to roll with falls.

Royalty pollutes people’s minds, boy. Honest men start bowing and bobbing just because someone’s granddad was a bigger murdering bastard than theirs was. Listen! We probably had good kings, once! But kings breed other kings! And blood tells, and you end up with a bunch of arrogant, murdering bastards! Chopping off queens’ heads and fighting their cousins every five minutes! And we had centuries of that! And then one day a man said ‘No more kings!’ and we rose up and we fought the bloody nobles and we dragged the king off his throne and we dragged him into Sator Square and we chopped his bloody head off! Job well done!

Tweet from JK Rowling: Today's ruling by the IOC means a welcome return to fair sport for women and girls, but I'll never forget the scandal of Paris 2024, when people who consider themselves supremely virtuous and progressive publicly cheered on men punching women.

Been thinking about it since I saw JK Rowling posted this yesterday about the IOC's new policy, calling Imane Khelif a man.

Imane Khelif was born female. She was raised as a girl. Her original birth certificate says female. She's always been a woman.

But sure. "Men punching women."

I tripped up on Sunday, mashed my face and got mild concussion. Do not recommend. Am considering actually working on my balance to stop this happening again.

You know the best way to kill AI? Don't use it. Don't buy it. Don't share it. Don't give the people who use it your labour or your money.

A vibrant Kingfisher in flight, captured in a streamlined position as it darts through the air. The bird's striking electric blue back and wings contrast with its bright orange underbelly. Its long, pointed beak is sharp and focused, as if it's hunting for prey. The background is a soft blur of green and brown hues, highlighting the kingfisher’s swift movement against the natural environment.
