Mercedes Peters, wearing a jean jacket and long dress, speaks to a full room in the Alden R. Clark Theatre. Her presentation can be seen on the screen at the front of the room: "'She didn't leave anybody out': Rita Smith, Mi'kmaw Family, and the Coming Together of Glooscap First Nation."
We're extremely grateful to have hosted the brilliant Mi'kmaw historian Mercedes Peters last Friday. It was a full house at the NB Sports Hall of Fame, where - in a lovely coincidence - Mercedes' dad Jason Peters is honoured for his contributions to Indigenous sports!
I beg to differ w this Liberal USA take:
The 🇺🇸 Empire is built on genocide, Land theft & slavery; it has nuked 🇯🇵 TWICE; it has cause tens of millions of deaths worldwide since; it is assisting 🇮🇱's genocide in 🇵🇸; it has elected Trump TWICE. Trump IS America, albeit without a mask.
This is a sick civilization.
An open call to genocide. It is clear that Gaza is how we got here- tolerating genocide in one space begets another. Generations of our ancestors have worked to build something different, toward the preservation of earthly life. I hope I live to see this re-orientation.
Nixon said, "I call it the Madman Theory. I want the North Vietnamese to believe...I might do anything to stop the war. We’ll just slip the word: “We can’t restrain him when he’s angry—and he has his hand on the nuclear button”—Ho Chi Minh himself will be in Paris in two days begging for peace.”
Nightmare shit. A prisoner from the George Floyd Uprising has just disappeared from state DOC records after weeks of being held in solitary and having no access to communications.
A crisis is building in Mi'kma'ki because of the small-minded racism of the provincial Tory government and the colonial RCMP.
All support to the defenders of Indigenous sovereignty on unceded territory.

We've had a very bad rash of them here at UNB lately, too.

In the least surprising April Fools' day of all time, the SSHRC portal is down.
"It was like a musical where we were the baddies," recounted angry, confused Conservatives, reacting to the singing protestors who so rudely interrupted the business of the House.

Canadian colonizers torture children, too.

This makes me wonder, what would it be like to have mass media who aren't trying to shoehorn fascism into some sort of rational-state neoliberal poli sci 101 from the 90s?
The media don't even come close to doing their job -- describing events as they're happening, so that ppl can understand them.
I've been listening to a lot of radio coverage of the war (mostly Al-Jazeera and BBC).
They bring on analysts who carefully deconstruct American/Israeli reasoning, decoding Truth Social posts. But the experts always end with something like...of course both these countries are bonkers, so...?

same old fridge tho.
Can we just ask one thing of the Avi Lewis fans? When the NDP brain trust pulls a Labour and prefers to tank the party rather than let it be led by a bona fide social democrat, will you promise to continue to be involved in left politics outside of the electoral arena?
I've often thought in debating dippers that it would be easier to understand each other if they were actually reformist. Usually, the best thing we can hope for from NDP governments is that they don't actively make the situation worse.
If my friend or relative were killed in a plane crash caused by neoliberalism and all the pundits were just upset some rich asshole didn't talk about it in the right language, I would suggest a few places where they could get off.
It's good old traditional incompetence combined with fun new terrifying world-ending robot incompetence!
As the father of a toddler, and a human who cares about children in general: there is no world in which a horror like this can be tolerated or justified.
NEW BLOG! Read Nina Vodopivec's latest blog, examining how the experiences of Slovenian industrial (textile) workers were systematically silenced during the post-socialist transition, with their demands dismissed as “nostalgia” while deindustrialization was portrayed as inevitable.
In today’s post Fred Burrill @fburrill.bsky.social explores the “housing crisis” and the role of capitalism within it.
This post is part of a forthcoming series exploring tenant activism and responses, stay tuned!
On the blog, Jay Lalonde, Tegan Rowlings, and Zachary A. Tingley cast a critical eye on the Nova Scotia Government's decision to cut funding to the history and heritage industries:

The American death cult was on full display at the WBC, compared to the sheer joy and love of baseball of their Venezuelan opponents.
Oh, c'est terrible.
