It sometimes feels like as independent journalists, nothing we ever do is enough, and the work pile just gets taller and taller. If you support people like Rachel (or me or so many others), don't make your support contigent on quantity. Don't make us chase your eyeballs and your dollars.

I thought I had lost my ability to be shocked by odious influencer behaviour, but this — this broke my brain.

If you're early-career /a student /new grad wanting to pursue tech policy, @christopher-parsons.com has given you an incalculably valuable gift: a comprehensive guide, w/ his trademark thoroughness, on how. Also contains good advice for aspiring tech lawyers, & I'll add a few notes on that front 🧵:
I also suspect the ADHD rates for journalists are through the roof for all of those reasons, and ADHD and anxiety often go hand-in-hand. I’d love to see a study on this.
This sounds an awful lot like socialism

We’re about to hear a lot of hand-wringing about how the internet did this to men but this is what men did to the internet.
I already hated everything being gambling now yet it continues to get worse
I tweeted about this years ago and a veteran journo thought I was talking about someone else, a reporter who took up with a crime victim’s mother years earlier. So that’s 2 men. And if we’re counting B. Lilley, that’s 3 male journos I’m aware of. Still no women.
In my 20+ years in and around journalism I’ve known exactly one (1) journalist who slept with a source and it was a man. Every woman I’ve met in journalism is way, way too aware of the scrutiny they’re under to even contemplate it.
The Alberta government is attacking @carrietait.bsky.social by name www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/alber... So you know you want to read her bombshell reportage: www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic... & www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic...
Bold of you to assume they ever ask themselves that question.
A company that answers the question "we can, but should we?" with an unhesitating "yes" every single time if it has any chance of making money. And often when it doesn't.
This thread by @zackbeauchamp.bsky.social articulates my concerns about post-Orbán Hungary in much more detail.

For sure. Kudos to the Hungarian electorate for delivering such overwhelming defeat. Also a sign that autocratization wasn’t so complete that denial or repression could have been a feasible strategy. Orban did not have a Lukashenka strategy at his disposal.
But I would really like to be proven wrong! And there’s no taking this victory away from opposition voters, considering how heavily the game was rigged against them. Definitely reason to celebrate.
I’m very happy for Hungary and Hungarians. But after watching Slovakia repeatedly oust and re-elect Orban Lite for the last 20 years, I’m slightly less optimistic about the staying power of liberal democracy in Central European countries with weakened institutions. www.bbc.com/news/live/c2...
And if Orban is anything like Fico, he can lie low for a few years and make a comeback when the new government doesn’t miraculously fix everything

Would love to know how the Liberals that want to ban teenagers from using social media feel about Mark Carney calling for AI in the classroom?
“AI in education can meet every child where they are”
Repeated exposure to external threats does more than shape security policy; it forges a collective memory that influences how entire societies perceive threats, trust neighbors and prepare for future crises.

NYC mayor Mamdani at a podium, behind him is a red panda in a tree. Caption reads: The delivery app HungryPanda will be held accountable for scamming small businesses. We're making them pay back the $500,000 they stole.| The hungry red panda behind me will be held adorable.
Whatever they’re paying his comms team, it’s not enough. @mayor.nyc.gov

I’ve heard the phrase “competency porn” but I’ve never really felt it until watching that whole thing.
