VOMEN RULERS G
SCHOLARS: ANTIQUITY, RECEPTION, TODAY
Lunch and Conversation with Drs. Christina Hotalen (UMass) and Jeremy Swist (Michigan State)
Join us for lunch and learn about the history, historiography, and reception of three famous women under the Roman empire. Dr. Swist will introduce reception studies and highlight the work of Spanish scholar Marina Díaz Bourgeal on the philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria in similar media. Dr. Hotalen will then discuss the Julio-Claudian empresses Messalina and Agrippina the Younger in their ancient and modern reception-especially on screen and in heavy metal. The traditions ancient authors wrote under, and the pervasiveness of those attitudes, found their way into modern popular culture, which continues to influence the genre of metal. While classical reception in metal has largely privileged the experiences of men who are celebrated for their masculinity, with more women entering both the metal scene and the discipline of Classics, both have reoriented focus towards traditionally marginalized perspectives. As a result, there has been increasing interest in the reception of women from antiquity in film and metal music.
WHO: Anyone who is woman-identifying and is interested in Classics or Philosophy!
WHEN: Monday, March 2d. 12:30-2:00 PM
WHERE: Roberts Dining Hall, Room 034

"OV FIRE AND THE VOID"
The Use and Abuse of Greek Philosophy in Heavy
Metal Music
Jeremy Swist
Assistant Professorof ClassicalStudies, Michigan
State University
Since its inception in the 1970s, heavy metal music has been popularly perceived as a low-brow form of entertainment for youths more interested in sex, drugs, and rebellion for its own sake than in more erudite topics like history, literature, and philosophy. The reality is that metal has long combined transgressive and Dionysian tendencies with a fascination with the myths, heroes, and ideas of antiquity.
This lecture examines metal's rich engagement, through lyrics and artwork, with Greek philosophers such as Heraclitus, Plato, and Epicurus. Their use (and abuse) lends authenticity to metal musician's rebellious worldviews, even to advance extreme ideologies.
March zed 7:30-9pm
Ostrove Auditorium

It makes me sad to look at.
