Yeah, that indeed doesn’t seem accurate.

And she clearly has an affinity for the island too. Which could likely now influence policy.
But I don’t know if there’s a decided end point that people are aiming toward.

I don’t think it’s accurate to say that these actions hint at de jure recognition of Taiwanese independence.
There’s clearly been a change in views towards Taiwan and China and a greater willingness to be seen publicly talking to Taiwan. That precedes Takaichi.

Lovely last full day in Beijing.

Perfect day to stop and get my favourite food here - a Jianbing from the caravan outside Fuchengmen station. No idea how many of these I have eaten, but so good.

But that doesn’t mean that she isn’t looking to chart a different course in Taiwan policy. Or that Japan’s government was making gradual changes to that policy even before she was PM.
(That’s how China sees it, BTW. As the latest in a long line of intentional steps.)

I’ve been going back and forth on this.
I honestly don’t think that her Diet statement was intentional. If you watch the video it feels like a slip. Or a “saying the quiet part out loud” cause it’s the end of a long day.

Sure. And the reaction (or lack or one really) in Japan to Takaichi’s comment shows indicate how that debate might go now.
Or maybe people really did understand what they were agreeing to then, even if the debate was constrained.

I can’t imagine it would have been good for the gradually improving China ties to have had a clearer debate in 2015.

Yeah, similar enough to my view. Although the “strategic ambiguity” part of the policy has shifted.
