‘People still remember it 40 years later’: the making of Chuckie Egg The iconic game that came to define 8-bit programming still conjures flutters of nostalgia 40 years on – all thanks to a 15-year-old tea boy who worked a Saturday shift in a computer shop in Greater M...

Hi I wrote about the making of classic platformerChuckie Egg and talked to its creator Nigel Alderton. Please give it a read as I want to show there’s an audience for this gaming history stuff 🙏

This was cooler in my head. The zooming countdown needs a little more work.

Monster Lair is underappreciated. It’s like the original Wonderboy except with more shooting and with a good variety of weapon powerups.

What was galling is that computers began costing easily over a grand in the 90s here with PC and Mac, and you’re paying a lot for tank-like durability and fast expansion busses and crap most users don’t really need.

Here’s my boxed Nitro. NTSC version! I bet the only difference is the sticker on the side of the box. Manual is even the European one with the UK address and phone number and four languages.

I think it’s a shame these peripherals weren’t released. I always imagine a 90s where you could get a computer for a few hundred bucks like in the 80s. Coulda done all kinds of stuff had there been a real push.

One of the best clones of Sega’s Hot Rod. I’d love to try it multiplayer someday because the CPU is a tad easy. It does 3 players locally!

Been messing about with some C64 maths code for a possible version of Delphian. At 1Mhz on my C64U it's a bit slow, but probably playable for what I need once I add interrupt driven controls.

I had this one as a kid and really liked it. Haven’t revisited it since but I remember really liking the ball and chain and the archery. I think it was a budget release even in the states.

Yup. The last decade has shown that there just isn’t a groundswell of support for socialist policies from rural whites (or any other would-be republicans). It’s sad that a lot of people would rather be racist jerks than improve their own lives, but that’s what we’re dealing with.

Yeah not too surprised. Anything from anyone major or just internet randos?

Loved him on The Pitt. I’ve been revisiting season 1 after finishing 2.

One of my favorite anime style screens in gaming, from Alisa Dragoon. Though, I think this particular image looks better on composite (pretty heavy vertical dithering)

Do you know anything about the FM patch design in those old games? I wonder if anyone pulled settings off something like an FB-01 or properly learned FM patch design. Tim Follin of course was a whiz.

Everyone around me had a NES and I haaaaated it because almost every game hinged on knowing all the secrets. I did like 1943 and Lifeforce, but I wasn’t digging the rest. If they had a computer or pre crash console that’s what I wanted to play instead. I’ve warmed up to NES a little since.

Paradroid is an all time great. What a game. I had it as a kid on a mystery floppy :) played Speed Buggy in the arcade and didn’t even know until much later there were home ports, and I fell in love with the Commodore one. It’s just got so much 8-bit cuteness.

My first console was a Genesis

Underrated games is tough because there are games released in North America which people should’ve played, but they were popular elsewhere. Speed Buggy, RodLand, Paradroid…
