Just a reminder - please and thank you truly are magic words.
I've know her for awhile!! We co-authored (along with @seismatters.bsky.social and Thomas Searles) one of my favorite opinion pieces in 2021!
Pictures of the resilient and collaborative photonics community at Photonics West 2026
While the technical program at SPIE #PhotonicsWest was outstanding as always, what stood out most was the sense of global community. The numerous in-person interactions were a powerful reminder of why conferences matter. π§ͺπ‘

New paper alert! π We present NC-PCA, a noise-aware PCA method that boosts FLIM analysis, reduces uncertainty 5.5Γ, & keeps far more data than thresholding/filtering-only approaches.

Low-photon FLIM data is messy. So we built NC-PCA, a denoising approach that preserves signal structure while stripping away noise & validated on synthetic data, dyes, & >800 colorectal cancer organoids. Proud of this team!

Aww. Thank you! It is also Jack's first first-author paper - so it is a huge team celebration (internally).
Excited to share our teamβs work on improving FLIM metabolic imaging. NC-PCA selectively removes shot noise without filters or training. The result? Clearer phasors, higher accuracy, & better biological insights.

Breaking news: Iβve uncovered a new law of academic publishing!!
The moment I board a plane, a manuscript decision arrives for my team.
At this point, the fastest way to speed up our publications might just be more travel.

It is!!!
Right after a successful PhD defense
Image of the entire research lab celebrating Lexie Scholtz's defense
Congratulations to Lexie Scholtz who just defended her PhD in BME! She's headed off on Monday to KLA to be an applications and packaging engineer!!

I can't stop thinking about this. It was so amazing to see people working together - literally or just by being patient when their commute was put on hold - to save a little life. It was truly heartwarming.
If you're the person who just stopped all traffic on the CA10 to try to catch a tiny gray kitten or the guy who crawled under your Prius to pull the little guy out of your wheel well after he got scared...
Thank you for making the world a better place.
Someone warmed up a cinnamon roll for breakfast in the microwave, and now the entire floor smells like cinnamon deliciousness.
One year, I had a game in my lab that was "what do you think the most expensive thing in the room is?"
The change in behavior was amazing (and immediate).
Never thought I'd use my engineering/physics skills like this! π

St. Patrick's Day themed chocolate torte and sugar cookies.
Made some St. Patrick's Day treats for the team! Mini-chocolate torts (shaped like four leaf clovers) and orange sugar cookies (with green clovers painted on in sparkly dust).
May everyone have a little luck today! π

Fig. 1: Phasor analysis workflows for FLIM data. After image acquisition on a FLIM system, the data is analyzed using different approaches. (a) Filtered phasor analysis method (FPA) includes image selection based on total counts, dynamic thresholding, and application of a selective smoothing filter. (b) Thresholded phasor analysis (TPA) only involves the application of an adaptive threshold. (c) Noise-corrected Principal Component Analysis (NC- PCA) begins with a Poisson noise normalization, then application of PCA, and subsequent thresholding and phasor transformation

My favorite: I buy some particles from a company, & I need to know the composition for some modeling. I politely reach out & ask, only to be told it's a "trade secret".
I'll see your trade secret and raise you a TEM with EDX. ππ
