On top of the slowdown in grantmaking I wrote about last week - this is another deeply worrisome trend for scientists, physicians, patients, families, and basically anyone who wants new treatments and new tools to promote health. 🆘🧪🥼

The team worked incredibly hard to get this out the door in time to share with grant review committees, and I am so grateful for their effort.
If you have thoughts, questions, or ideas for where this platform could (or should) go next, we would love to hear from you.
On a personal note: as an early stage PI, it’s become clear how hard it is to sell any new project to grant reviewers without a proven track record. This one is a major milestone for us, and just a snapshot of the momentum our lab is building and what we’re capable of.
Immensely proud of this team effort led by Ryan and Stefan @bffswithbiology.bsky.social @stefan-golas.bsky.social. Could not have asked for a better team. This is just the beginning.
Evolution navigated billions of challenges to get to us to where we are today. Directed evolution compresses this to a 1D axis.
Imagine if you could sample 200 dimensions at once, with data to boot 📈

A noninvasive estrous tracking toolkit for wild mice. Standard genetic engineering methods built for lab mice do not translate to non model rodents. This helps overcome that barrier and may enable engineering in many other species.
So proud this multi-year effort is finally out. Led by my exceptional collaborator Joanna Buchthal, who put her blood, sweat, and literal tears into making a real impact for communities impacted by Lyme disease. bit.ly/MAT-tracking

Happy holidays from all of us in the Chory Lab and our lab neighbors at Duke!☃️🎉 @chorylab.bsky.social @dukeubme.bsky.social
There’s fair concern around a few African ancestry associated-SNPs w Casgevy. Suspect if in enchancers/promoters, deleterious effects would take much time to tell tho.
What an endorsement!

They all do! But I automate my calendar deadlines and dates in emails are particularly helpful for that when you have 55 letters to submit :)
The weirdest move is automated letter-request systems sending emails with no deadline included.

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

Major Comments:
1) The absence of ref Ahlqvist et al. (2024, JAMA) calls the manuscript’s central claims into question. This selective omission undermines the work’s credibility. Major revisions required prior to resubmission.
