Among China’s 30% of electricity consumption, nearly 60% is generated by coal, another 3% by fossil gas.

If the Energy Information Agency can do this, the open-data non-governmental-organizations can do it and will do it the best. Right? @globalenergymon.bsky.social

I’m thinking of those several dozens GM new gas plants relying on imported LNG in China’s coastal areas built after 2022 Russia-Ukraine war energy crisis. Are they foreseeing this to come? Did they think such crisis would not happen again? Are they too naively optimistic or simply too greedy?

More than 40 Middle East energy assets ‘severely damaged,’ IEA chief says The IEA’s Fatih Birol warned that damage to energy infrastructure across the Middle East would take some time to repair.

"...fallout from the Iran war is equivalent to the two major oil crises of the 1970s and the 2022 gas crisis “put together.”

Wow!

2026-2027 will feature accelerating global energy transition to non-fossil fuel generation, EVs, heat pumps, electrification.

China still developing a big amount of LNG terminals. The receiving capacity will increase 60% when all constructions completed and can receive nearly 3 times more than 2025’s LNG imports. They are subjected for loss even before entering operation.

China’s LNG imports declined significantly in 2025 due to higher spot prices. The US/Israel-Iran war pushed the price going higher and also physically blocked the logistics flow. LNG does not make sense on both energy security and economy for China, especially when renewables grow so fast.

Now State Grid plans to build 15 DC UHV lines during 15th FYP period to support renewables. However, by 2030, the mega wind and solar bases in Northwest China are expected to transmit outward 315 GW. That means at least 21 lines required. State Grid may fail to meet needs even at the planning stage.

4 years ago China’ State Grid announced 380b RMB investment during the 14th FYP period to build 14 AC and 10 DC UHV lines. The result is, according to GEM, it invested 308.1 billion RMB and only completed 8 AC and 8 DC UHVs. Of these, only 3 DC UHVs were dedicated to renewable energy transmission.

AI: Does not compute Building fossil-fuel infrastructure to power data centers is a poor bet. Renewables are by far the cheaper, faster choice.

1/4 century ago, the coal industry warned that the Internet would overwhelm the grid without massive new coal capacity. Today, Gas and nuclear vendors that can’t beat energy efficiency and renewables in competitive markets are leveraging hype into mandates and subsidies to rescue their losers.

China’s known as a renewable leader, less known it’s a coal giant, even less known it’s world No.2 gas power developer, even though gas only generates 4% of total power. GEM’s new data shows the US surpassed China in new proposals in 2025. A race to the bottom continues.
