Last Monday, our fourth-year and postgraduate JMC students headed to the BBC Scotland HQ in Glasgow ๐ฅ
They met the Digital News and Social Media teams, got a behind-the-scenes look at the day-to-day life of BBC journalists, and even stepped inside the TV studio!
๐ง Last Thursday, we teamed up again with The Strathclyde Telegraph for a lively quiz at the Strath Union!
Students and lecturers put their knowledge to the test across music, news, sport & politics โ a great way to bring the JMC community together.
๐ On 12 March, we partnered with The Strathclyde Telegraph and the National Union of Journalists to host a pizza-fuelled talk with Catherine Deveney.
She shared insights from her career, from interviewing celebrities to crafting great questions.
๐ JMC has been buzzing with events over the last few weeks at Strathclyde!
From guest speakers to social events, itโs been great to see students engaging with journalism both inside and outside the classroom.
This is what JMC at Strathclyde is all about:
๐ Industry partnerships
๐ฐ Real-world experience
๐ Preparing students for careers in media
๐ฌ"I was given the platform to let my creativity flourish in promoting the event, as well as discussing ideas as a team with industry professionals. This has already had a very positive impact on my confidence and ability to put forward effective content", said Mannix Elliot.
Student feedback has been fantastic:
๐ฌ โIt was an absolute joy to work with the BBC on their โBBC Verify on Tourโ event and to be part of the battle against misinformation and deepfakes in the mediaโ, said Santiago Parra-Whitehead.
4th-year students worked alongside industry professionals and interviewed alumni, exploring career paths, newsroom realities, and essential skills. The experience helped them develop key skills in interviewing, and content creation, while gaining insight into the challenges facing journalism today.

Thanks to BBC Academy Live for bringing the event to Strathclyde and to all pupils and JMC students involved. A shout-out to Dr Petya Eckler for coordinating the event in JMC and our lecturers Andy Harrow, Ashlie Dunn, and Jane Barrie for offering brilliant exclusive workshops for our participants!
We're finishing the day in style with a Production Q&A with Cheryl Richardson (The Great British Sewing Bee) and Rebecca Morris (The Traitors)! Participants can ask the panelists about how production of TV realities work, production routines, and much more
Weโre especially proud that Declan, Daniella and Jennifer are JMC Strathclyde alumni ๐
Itโs an honour to host such an incredible panel, and very special to see how far our graduates go. โจ
As part of the event, we're having a great panel about media careers with Dan Hopps (BBC), Declan McConville (Glasgow World), Daniella Theis (DC Thomson), Jennifer Wilson (BBC News Scotland), and Alison Goring (NFTS Scotland).
We're starting the day with a masterclass by Paul Brown, from BBC Verify, called "Filter the Fakes". The class is designed to help young people build their news literacy and strengthen their critical thinking skills.
Starting now! BBC Academy brought BBC Verify on tour to Strayhclyde in a partnership with JMC. Weโre kicking off a series of events and workshops with 200+ high school pupils and Strath students. Strath is the only uni in Scotland hosting this event.
As a warm-up for the event, check the video produced by our student Santiago Parra-Whitehead breaking down everything you need to know about Misinformation in the contemporary environment, and what Strathclyde and the BBC are doing to combat it. www.youtube.com/shorts/5bMQB...

๐จNew publication alert! @antoniskalog.bsky.social, @patyrossini.bsky.social, @lamprinirori.bsky.social and I investigated the implications of news avoidance in Greece and Brazil. We looked at how different patterns of news avoidance relate to misinformation, trust, and electoral participation
Weโre delighted to share a standout piece by first-year JMC student Emily Henderson. Emily wrote a sharp, timely review - so good it was published in the Rutherglen Reformer and on the website.
Well done, Emily, hereโs to many more bylines to come!
