Itβs so so good. Thanks for this thread, Iβll rewatch too.
To say nothing of Idris Elba
Ugh, reading that Atlantic piece leaves the distinct impression that this thing is a ticking time bomb ripe for another incident. So many boulders!
So true, it's why Gill had to remind Benny about "my wife, Danielle."
Guys, this is soo soo good, I'm hooked and can't wait for Part 2! Re Jamelle's point about Grant's 1864 bloody campaign, it's worth remembering there were thousands of recently-recruited Black soldiers who took part. In part bc of Douglass' lobbying Lincoln in early 1863 to allow Black enlistment.
Ok guys, here is an absolute MUST READ for anyone who is interested in why is DC "like that." Neil is working on a book project that explains this, and how the Reno neighborhood in NW DC sparked his interest.
Meanwhile, he's launched a weekly newsletter, so smash that subscribe button!
Fantastic read, Neil, well done, you! You better believe I smashed that subscribe button!
Go Jackson-Reed students! Very proud Class of 1977 alum here. The kids are alright!
The kids are alright!
"Court of law," indeed.
Thanks so much for flagging this, such a wonderful obituary of a truly amazing writer. I read the full piece she wrote in 1970 in the Washington Monthly about gay liberation, and it was quite something. What a gift she had with her pen.
An an outstanding piece by our modern day prophet of freedom Ta-Nehisi Coates, exploring the misbegotten concept of The Homeland, and comparing Renee Good and Alex Pretti to slain civil rights activist Viola Liuzzo. Well worth the read.

Yes, yes, amend 42 USC 1983 to include suits against federal actors. Simple fix, and would mean a sea-change in federal immunity.
This is so true, what a good idea.
Wow, Prof. Segall really nails it here: we can't reform the Supreme Court until we call it for what it is, not even a real "court of law." Well done, and well framed. His essay is so short and sweet, highly recommend!
Just think of the ready market of support for a public-trust model of ownership of the Post, or a Post competitor, along the lines of the public ownership of the Green Bay Packers. The model exists, loyal Post readers would readily chip in to a giant $1bil. fund to buy the Post, or start a rival.
I could envision a series of hearings focusing on victims of ICE abuse, destruction of the civil service, former military officers focusing on war crimes, lawyers and agents whoβve resigned from DOJ and FBI instead of engaging in unethical or illegal action, just to name a few.
I couldnβt agree more! If Dems take the House, they will have the power to conduct investigative hearings next year. A useful model is the Klan Hearings of 1871:

Perhaps if the Dems take the House, they could hold a series of investigative hearings, along the lines of the Klan Hearings of 1871, to thoroughly document the current lawlessness. We could see televised testimony by ICE victims, DOJ lawyers who've resigned, military officials, etc. Here's hoping
The legal analysis is 100% spot on. We have a welter of laws that allow individuals to sue state and local officials for violations of their rights (like 42 USC 1983), but an insurmountable wall of principles that immunize federal officials. We need full reform, along the lines of Reconstruction
How about if the Dems take the House, they conduct a Klan Hearings of 1871-style series of investigative hearings to document the lawlessness of Trump and his gang of enablers?
In 1871, Congress found that the KKK was essentially a white supremacist paramilitary organization that carried out "murders, whippings, intimidation and violence" against its opponents. Sound familiar to anyone? @hcrichardson.bsky.social @jamellebouie.net @adamserwer.bsky.social
I fear you may be right, but the military has never been at the vanguard of defending our Constitution. That's been the province of the people ourselves, writ large. See the history of Reconstruction and the Civil Rights Movement. Don't give up on us yet! BTW, I would love to visit Nova Scotia!
Ugh, you're so right, this is all putting me in mind of the "outrages" of Reconstruction. Except this time, it's not the KKK, but the fed. govt. itself. What would you think, if Dems take the House, of of them launching a Klan Hearings of 1871-like initiative next year, to document all of this?
levin-center.org/congress-inv.... employees and former employees about that they are witnesseing. It could be along the lines of the famous Klan Hearings of 1871. I wonder what @hcrichardson.bsky.social would think about this? See
rampant lawlessness, especially by ICE, but by all the Trump enablers now in charge. We do need a 'truth and reconciliation' mechanism, and if the Dems take the House, they could lead the way next year, with a series of investigative hearings. Maybe schedule open hearings around the country 2/3
A great town hall to watch from start to finish. As impressive as Pete was, I was even more inspired by the thoughtful questions from the audience. One not clipped here was from a military and police dept. veteran who was concerned about how we achieve justice -- not vengeance -- for the 1/3
Great idea, Dave, maybe a bit short of "WWTS" (What Would Thaddeus Stevens) do, but hey maybe a start!
Ok, Neil, with a post like this, you definitely qualify for membership in the Title 5 U.S.C/civil service cognoscenti.
