Plodding along with the Leman Russ. Orange is done bar edge highlighting, which is honestly 70% of the painting work.

However I am definitely distracted after my Old World game, so I honour of my heroic gyrocopter, I've assembled a second, this one the 1st model from the 80s.

Today I played Old World.

Wow.

That was feeling that wargaming gave me when I was young.

Cannons exploded, gyrocopters charged down necromancers, slayers slew, a lucky overrun gave a unit of grave guard a sweeping flank charge.

My dwarfs lost, but I won.

Time to get more vows done

A bit of a lull in my hobby mono, but still making progress. The russ hull and turrets gave thier first layers of camo applied.

I've also been doing a bit of a clean up and sort through my pile of shame. Can't deny those oldhammer dwarfs are calling me!

Finished up the Russ' second turret with all 4 weapons.

Decided this commander will get the old 'drive me closer, I want to hit them with my sword!' pose! A classic 40k meme!

That means the tank is fully magnetised with all options... bar a hunter killer. Time to paint!

Fully magnetised and drilled barrels on the demolisher turret options for the leman russ commander. Still have the other turret to make, but it's already tons of options.

So I decided to get them sprayed up so the painting can start. The other turret can be another project.

Definitely, it seems especially important now. Next edition is very close, and even the small rules previews we have recontexualise leman russ weapons.

Cover going to -1 bs rather that -1ap will make the standard battle cannon and autocannons a lot more interesting.

If you want to get your money worth on a leman russ then magnetise it! Its taken me several nights and I've not finished building!

The tank commander has been converted up and the demolisher turret options are all built, even if only the executioner plasma cannon has magnets!

Spent the evening building a russ, including magnetised front guns.

Not that you'd ever use anything but the lascannon, given no points costs for weapons. Plus they friction fit anyway...

I'm sure it was time well spent!

That's the Hellhound complete!

I've magnetised the front weapons and painted all of those too, plus the spare heavy flamer for my basalisk.

Next month I only have a tank commander to build and paint, so I'll catch up with the unpainted options for the hellhound and sentinels.

The hellhound is approaching completion. The black needs highlights, the orange needs edge highlights. Then the myriad of cables, sensors, and doohickeys will need picking out.

So not much left, very nice progress in 2 days of not very intense painting.

Progressing on the hellhound, I've given it a more directional diamondish pattern, think I'm a fan.

Struggling a bit to sit down for longer painting sessions, but a bit of paint a day grows the army!

The mortar teams are finished. Some light artillery to pester my opponents home objective holders.

Each team has a firer and a 'specialist'. A loader, a spotter, and a guard. I do feel I could have done more on the bases to make them more like mini dioramas.

More progress on the mortar teams. Unsurprisingly quicker to paint than the rough riders!

Closing in on the camo pattern and final details now before I can get them on their tree bases.

Its been a long while since I've had a big shopping spree for new models, but the Hades IX 3rd regiment needs reinforcements.

When the imperium asks for its tithe you don't say no!

Here is how it looks on a couple of finished catachans with medium Caucasian and pale Caucasian skin.

Its the base colour for the skin. I only leave any showing on downward facing areas. I find it gives quite dramatic shadows to the underside of their arms.

The rough riders are finished! Absolutely loved this kitbash and paint job, though they took a long time for a cheap unit!

Treated myself to a quick army shot (560pts) and then got going on the mortar teams.

Unsurprisingly these are noticeably quicker to paint!

Its definitely a classic guard conversion. A quick Google search shows almost every regiment on cold ones!

Back from airecon, which was great, and back at the painting table.

The rough riders are almost done now, got the claws and spikes done, along with some smaller details.

Just the camo pattern on the soldiers as the last major painting focus.

Im off on a work trip now, so hobbystreak takes a break.

Im doing well on this month's catachans. Rough riders are 90% done, just some highlights and details to go.

Mortars have painted bases and a bit of basecoating, probably 20% done.

Its easy to feel like the progress is slowed when you spend 2 days doing bases. I guess I'm a bit aware that I've got a lot to finish in a month I'm away for a week!

Lucky I do hobbystreak and can look back to.a few days ago and see these dino riders progressing nicely!

I've been busy basecoating away a mix of the mortar teams and the rough riders.

I may have gotten a little distracted and highlighted up the majority of the mounts for the rough riders.

Im going to argue it was needed before basecoating the leather straps!

I find the slow grow, plus the hobbystreak really keeps the mojo, and paint, flowing.

Its a new month, so I've been busy assembling the next 250 points of guard for my new year project.

This month it's a hellhound, a unit of rough riders and a heavy weapon squad with mortars. Hopefully providing a nice combination of long and short ranged support.

That's why I'm currently challenging myself to do 250 points painted a month.

I buy 250 points, build 250 points, paint 250 points. Next month start again. No time to let the backlog build!

I start by painting the whole coild area in abyss blue from 2 thin coats. Then using watered down paints pulling towards the bottom of the coils, I use Calgar blue, then Temple guard blue, an old pot of ice blue, then mix in white, then pure white at the edge. Bars get abyss blue again the black

Spent the last two nights putting far too much effort into 60 points of rough riders.

There's no way a Catachan would ride a horse. You can't keep them alive on a death world!

They need a mount as ferocious as predatory as thier home planet. A giant Raptor.

Getting there. Haven't done it on any models in a minute, but I did a nice dirty wash on the treads. Need to go back and do it to a bunch of my Deathwatch and Guard models.
