Queen Elizabeth resisting demands for money! What next?
Moore and Corunna + Walcheren….
I remember getting it when it first came out, and it was v expensive then, so probably relatively few copies sold to private buyers. Wonderful book though - taught me a lot, and not just about its subject.
Thank you - most interesting. (I live in Heysen and have absolutely no insights to offer).

Uxbridge wouldn’t have been hoppalong until AFTER the battle, but he did have a reputation for getting his leg over, so perhaps you can work something with that.
A cartoon of four images, representing a pre-sleep dialogue between a girl and her brain. Brain: “Did you enjoy that non-fiction history book?” Girl: “Yes, Brain. It was well written. It was a good story. Why?” Brain: “Did you notice it had a vague bibliography and NO referencing?” Girl: (says nothing, eyes open wide, all hope of sleep gone)
Reworked this old favourite, chiefly for amusement of sad people like myself - credit owed to the original author except I don’t remember their name and not even sure I ever knew it.

I think that desertion rates were usually higher at home than abroad in the British army.
Were these mostly men who deserted to go home soon after they’d been conscripted rather than leaving their units on campaign?
Do you have the figure for Australia?
As so often we can only speculate on the story behind the bald facts, but so many intriguing possibilities…

Oh yes, that sounds like a sizeable warren all on its own! Wonder why he wasn’t returned with the rest of Junot’s men? Not sure which would have been worse: seven years in British captivity or seven years with the colours including Massena’s invasion of Portugal…
Nothing wrong with some good rabbit holing!
Have you read the description of the cricket match in England their England by A G Macdonell (similar vintage and flavour, though the book as a whole is comedy not crime … and the rest of it is rather dated)?
I wonder how many of my Napoleonic friends know this... I just learned that in 2015 Belgium issued a €2.5 commemorative coin to mark the anniversary of Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo. They wanted it on their €2 coin but France vetoed that idea even after Belgium minted 180,000 of those coins (they
More than one book on almost every subject on which he has written - and that’s almost every subject relating to the political, diplomatic or military history of the 18th century and adjacent decades. The real question is whether anyone has ever read them all, or ever will…
