Today, the Arctic emerges as a crucible of geopolitical, economic, and environmental contestation. Our video of the week traces how US fantasies of buying Greenland are not just imperial nostalgia but a symptom of Western anxieties.

Title and abstract for Wilfrid Greaves and Gabriella Gricius, "The Fragmented Arctic: Comparing Arctic security public opinion in Russia and the A7," Polar Record 63, e6 (2026): 1-13.
In turbulent times, it's useful to reflect on patterns of change and stability over the longer term.
That's what @ggricius.bsky.social and I do in our long-anticipated new article. We compare data from all 8 Arctic countries between 2007-2024 to identify patterns in Arctic security public opinion.
Last week I traveled to Michigan and gave a lecture on #Greenland with the @umich.edu If you want to listen in, the full recording is below:

Tune into @ggricius.bsky.social discussing #ArcticSecurity in a new discussion with @crisisgroup.org
Feeling the need to cool down? On the new @crisisgroup.org War & Peace podcast, I talk to @ggricius.bsky.social about Arctic security--what it is, what great powers want from the region, what NATO is doing & why. If you want answers to these questions, listen in!
YGLN members Federica Dall’Arche, Alexandra Filippenko, @ggricius.bsky.social, @henriklarsen.bsky.social, and ELN Policy Fellow Nikita Gryazin write that the matter still requires increased cooperation and strengthened alliance cohesion.

“I do not expect Arctic Sentry to heighten military tensions. I see it as a strategy for the Allies to develop more presence and predictability in the region," said @ggricius.bsky.social

Thank you!
I'm happy to share a recently published article with Will Greaves, where we present an original dataset of 164 public opinion polls across the Arctic from 2007-2024 that illustrates the fragmentation of the Arctic into two distinct blocs.

U.S. interest in Greenland is long-standing and primarily driven by homeland defense considerations, but everything the US needs for its defense is already covered by the defense agreement between Denmark, Greenland, and the U.S.
The so-called Russian and Chinese ships or military threats to Greenland are not real. There are Russian and Chinese ships in the Bering Strait, on the opposite side of the U.S. This idea that is driving a so-called US need for the purchase of Greenland is purely manufactured.
It's already been a busy start to the new year, with many Greenland-related inquiries. So to say the obvious:
Greenland is not for sale. Greenlanders do not want to be a part of the US, and respecting their self-determination is the most important message.
@ggricius.bsky.social said the Trump administration’s claims that Russian and Chinese ships are circling the island are “just not true. The Russian and Chinese ships are not, in fact, in the North Atlantic... They’re in the Bering Strait."

While the US's plans to annex Greenland may draw Nuuk closer to Brussels, support for full EU membership remains limited. Whatever course the island takes, the decision is its own - with comments from @ggricius.bsky.social and Lin Alexandra Mortensgaard
