If you think your modern customer service struggles are bad, meet Nanni-a Babylonian businessman from 1750 BCE who was so incredibly fed up with a bad delivery that he chiseled his rage into a clay tablet for eternity. This is the infamous Complaint Tablet to Ea-nasir, officially recognized as the world's oldest recorded customer complaint. Imagine being so annoyed that instead of just typing a quick email, you spend hours meticulously carving cuneiform script into wet clay, waiting for it to dry, and then sending a messenger across the desert just to tell a guy his copper is "substandard." In the letter, Nanni calls out Ea-nasir for delivering the wrong grade of copper, treating his messenger with contempt, and generally being a "Mesopotamian menace." The best part? When archaeologists excavated Ea-nasir's house in the city of Ur, they found a whole collection of these complaint tablets. It turns out Ea-nasir wasn't just having a bad day-he was the Bronze Age equivalent of a shady online seller with a 1-star rating. Nearly 4,000 years later, we are still laughing at his terrible business practices.
