I have very few followers here and even fewer who are foreigners in Japan. But I want answers.

I’m posting this while drunk, so

My Japanese sucks shit. I’m N3 at absolute best (if you know what that means) and N5 if I’m tired. But I am extremely proud of my accent. But all I did to learn my Japanese accent is talk. I want to know what makes this specific type of rich white guy so good at Japanese but so awful at speaking it.

But the main thing I want to know is this: this man—this kind of man—usually speaks perfect Japanese. Impeccable grammar and vocabulary. Understands all the cultural references and norms. But, for some reason, this man cannot speak in a Japanese accent to save his life.

He works in tech or is some kind of “entrepreneur.” He is around 40, has extremely expensive glasses, wears plaid shirts tucked into khakis, and usually has a surprisingly unkempt beard. Often bald or balding. I’m not making judgements. My shit is thinning too. I said specific.

I get a sick perverted joy from watching the anxiety melt away from a service industry worker’s face when I speak to them in Japanese.
