From inside their employers’ homes, domestic workers — nannies, home cleaners and health aides — have watched attitudes on immigration shift to the right. They know some of the people who employ them may be the very people who want them out of the country.

It is becoming increasingly common for survivors to need help with housing, court cases and food insecurity. Advocates are spending more time trying to serve all these needs but governments are cutting back on victims services. Minnesota proposed a 20% cut in the 2027 budget.
Domestic violence services have been asked to do more with less for years. At the same time, demand has risen. That means some people slip through the cracks.
I spent a year trying to figure out why Julia wasn't able to get help. The answer is complicated.

@shanembailey.com hope you and your family are recovering. so sorry to hear this happened.
Facial recognition used this way is often inaccurate leading to wasted time and resources. It's been shown to be biased against people of color, especially Black women, and frequently misgenders trans people.
Who did this help?

even if accounts are recreated here they aren't always used the same way. i don't use this account the same way i used my twitter account. i re-followed a lot of people here and the accounts are abandoned, or just vehicles for viewing and not posting.
another day another dollop of mourning for a lost twitter connection
When survivors talk to a reporter (or reporters plural) and don’t report to the police, it’s not because they’re less trustworthy and don’t want to see systemic action. It’s because survivors have been failed so spectacularly by cops and courts that many survivors rightfully no longer trust them.
Excerpt from Chronicle story: The Chronicle shared a detailed summary of the woman’s account with Swalwell’s campaign on Thursday. Swalwell’s attorney, Elias Dabaie, wrote in the cease-and-desist letter that the woman had exhibited “the conduct of a loyal and supportive colleague, not a victim” and that “the credibility of your accusations is fatally undermined by your voluntary and cooperative relationship with Mr. Swalwell over the course of many years following the period in question.”
Appalling response to extremely detailed allegations. Swalwell was in a position of power over his employee. We know time and again survivors stop themselves from coming forward due to the fear of professional consequences.
“He was so confident that I would stay silent that he wasn’t scared,” she said of Swalwell.
Horrifying story from @sfchronicle.com about Rep. Swalwell, one of the leading Dem candidates in California's gubernatorial race.

Yes, everything I've been reporting for the past year is pointing to this.

And the way surprise pregnancy plots are treated, especially after Dobbs! There was a robust discussion on Reddit about how rarely abortion is brought up in books, and how some storylines verge into essentially forced birth scenarios.

20 Republican state attorneys general are pushing for the AMA to broadly oppose gender-affirming care for minors, in response to news coverage about their recommendations around youth surgeries.
And you may ask yourself "Well ... how did I get here?"
