It is..... definitely not. Few pings per plane per second, ≈10-20k planes airborne at a time, ≈3.5b messages per day

Yeah one of the reasons that ADSB makes intuitive sense here to me is it also has direct economic benefit - people *already* spend money in that space. Could imagine an audit trail of kickbacks for all players in the value chain (aggregating to distinct flights down to individual receivers)
