Believe Your Eyes People are risking their lives to document agents in Minneapolis.

Wrote about the observers. The people standing by and filming and the risk they are taking to let the world see what is happening. It's crucial and its the only way to combat the lies and blatant propaganda. www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

In the last year, changes in US border policy suggest a shift toward heightened securitization and more unilateral enforcement of the northern border, a departure from the integrated binational approach historically employed by Canada and the US to manage their ‘shared’ border.

📣 New publication alert!

Our new Brief highlights changes to US border policy – both proposed and implemented – that may ‘thicken’ the border crossing experience by increasing processing times, and potentially wait times for both Canadians and for non-Canadians traveling from Canada to the US.

I spoke with New Republic about #border state economic ties with #Canada and the impacts we could expect from this #trade war and increasingly heated rhetoric. The downstream effects on border communities will be varied and numerous.

everyone should listen to this in its entirety but journalists should listen to it multiple times. this is how you ask questions. you just keep asking simple, easily answerable stuff and the evasiveness becomes that much more glaring

Every day, electricity crosses the #Canada-US #border. In 2023, Canada provided power equal to electricity consumption by 4.58 million homes. On Tuesday, Trump imposed a 10% tariff on energy imports from Canada, which will most likely translate to higher utility bills for these millions of home.

It’s hard to stay engaged, but vitally important. I also know it’s hard to see the silver-lining, but there are many people doing good work out there to maintain relationships and make progress.

I think the time is nigh to die on every hill rather than be strategic about your battles. Get your head in the games, people.

Even with the pause in #tariffs, we’ve done some serious damage to our relationship with #Canada and #Mexico, and I don’t really think Americans have fully reckoned with that.

Politicians often frame #tariffs like those Trump proposed as punishment for other countries, but they hit Americans hardest—raising grocery bills and disrupting businesses. An economics professor explains: https://buff.ly/3Q3y0Lm (Bedassa Tadesse, University of Minnesota Duluth)

Any arguments that Trump and co make about #tariffs being about evening the playing field for American industry are out the window after agreements made today between #Canada and #Mexico. Tariffs were always about strong-arming our neighbors and biggest trading partners into getting what he wants.

Right?! I’m working on my alternatives to Meta products (which makes me feel SO old, but I digress…) but I am truly addicted to the NYT games, so unfortunate they had to ruin it by being complicit in this nonsense.

Trump’s proposed Canada tariff could boost Northwest energy bills President Donald Trump’s proposed 25% tariff on Canadian imports could be an expensive proposition for the Pacific Northwest, which depends heavily on its northern neighbors for energy supplies.

We won’t know the full impacts until we know what #tariffs actually end up looking like, but it’s important to understand that tariffs are a tax on imports. The buyer pays - American companies pay. On top of that, there will be unintended consequences, particularly in #border communities.
