A powerful moment at @lseplc.bsky.social as yesterday we closed the market to mark 97 years since the Equal Franchise Act.

With politicians, business leaders & allies, we celebrated progress & looked ahead to the centenary.

This is #Mission2028 — the road to a gender-equal Parliament.

Three disabled women in front of a broken wall to show breaking down barriers

Three disabled women in front of a broken wall to show breaking down barriers

Disabled women face many barriers to political office, limiting diverse perspectives. With 1 in 5 working-age adults disabled, we need a representative democracy. It’s time to ensure equal access to political power.

Our new report reveals that disabled people face barriers not just in Parliament, but also at the selection and election stages—leading to significant underrepresentation across the political system, particularly for women. We set out the change that's needed.

Our #Mission2028 campaign calls for urgent action to achieve a #GenderEqualParliament by 2028—the centenary of equal suffrage. While progress has been made, it’s still too slow. Women make up 51% of the population, yet remain underrepresented in Parliament. It’s time for change.🧵4/4

Over 100 years after women first gained the right to stand for election, men still outnumber women in the House of Commons. Today, 263 out of 650 MPs are women— 40%. Progress has been made, but more action is needed to achieve a #GenderEqualParliament 🧵2/4

Towards a gender equal parliament: lessons from candidate selection at the 2024 election - Centenary Action

Pleased to share new research from @chrisbutlerpol.bsky.social on #GE2024 candidate selection. A record number of female MPs were elected, but progress toward a #GenderEqualParliament still too slow. A record jump in women elected is needed next time.

This #IWD2025, we’re celebrating women MPs! Since women could first stand, 693 have been elected. Today, 263 women MPs make up 40% of the chamber—a historic feat, but not yet equal. Let’s inspire young women to see politics is for them & push for a #GenderEqualParliament by 2028!
