We only just saw this in the nick of time. We try to look after the fungi in the woods as part of looking after the woodland ecosystem.

We’re so lucky to do what we do for a living. Not only do we visit some beautiful places, but we get to play a part in the preservation & enhancement of habitats on them. We were excited about influencing the management of habitats on Field Irish Farm before we found such an interesting fungi there.

Whorled caraway flower

Whorled caraway flowering in our little meadow. The flowers and beautiful and delicate and it represents a level of success in restoring this area of species rich grassland.

Birds-nest orchids don't photosythasise, that take their nutrients by creating a structure like a birds-nest around the roots of a tree and sapping the nutrients from the tree. These are some that we found in a woodland in Devon.

The years that it's taken to restore this area of culm grassland have paid off. Great habitat and looking fabulous!

We suggested to a client that they put up a trailcam to monitor deer activity. They sent us this.

Greater Broomrape flowering stem.

We found this yesterday in a clearing in an ancient woodland that we have the honour of managing. It's greater broomrape. It doesn't photosynthesise and has no roots. It steels sugar and water from the broom it parasitises. It's nationally scarce and we were excited to find it.

Benches of the temperate rainforest

Violet Oil Beetles, found on Higher Comfort nature reserve.
They like species-rich grassland and woodland edges, which are exactly the habitats we're developing on the nature reserve. They parasitise solitary bees, so are an indicator of a healthy wild bee population.
