Huntington Beach must follow state's Freedom to Read Act, O.C. judge rules Orange County Superior Court Judge Lindsay Martinez ruled Friday morning that Huntington Beach cannot prohibit minors from accessing books at the city's public library.

I wrote the California Freedom to Read Act to fight censorship and book banning. The Orange County Superior Court recently upheld the constitutionality of the Act and cited it in ordering the City of Huntington Beach to uphold our First Amendment right to read books reflecting diverse perspectives.

I joined elected officials, the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce, faith and local leaders to call on getting ICE out of Terminal Island and out of LA.

Terminal Island was once home to a fishing village where 3K Japanese were forcibly removed by the government in 1942 following EO 9066.

Audit fallout: Highlands entire board resigns, state requests $180 million back Entire Highlands Charter board resigns after audit finds legal violations, nepotism, and misuse of funds. State demands $180M in repayment.

State Auditor found Highlands Charter Schools inappropriately received over $180 million in public education funding.
Last year I requested this audit and this year I introduced AB 84 to crack down on charter school fraud and abuse of K12 public education funds.

President Trump recently signed his big billionaire tax break, gutting Medicaid and defunding Planned Parenthood. This means that Planned Parenthood in CA can no longer receive federal reimbursement for women's health services.

I will continue to fight for Planned Parenthood and their patients.

My AB 477, the Fair Pay for Educator Workforce Act, passed the Senate Education Committee! It is now going to the Senate Appropriations Committee.

This bill would give teachers and school staff a raise by setting a higher local control funding formula (LCFF) target over 10 years.

Trump administration freezes $6.8 billion in federal education funds; California hit hard Trump is holding back funds to help educate English learners and the children of migrant seasonal workers. The cuts total at least $811 million in California.

Trump is illegally cutting federal education funding for immigrant students and after school programs. We need to help immigrant students learn English in a multilingual global economy. California must fight back.
