Millions of people are influenced by and take moral, social, and political messages from games. Major issues like war, colonialism, race, etc. play out across those screens he derides. Seems ignorant to not want to approach these major texts through a humanist framework!

The dismissal of games research is the ultimate tell here. Academic research on literature and philosophy were partially informed by the fact that these mediums and disciplines were the dominant forms of big K Knowledge-production for centuries. Games are now part of that knowledge production!

AND most critically, this form of humanities research is as much informed and influenced by economic, social, and political conditions as any other. There is no tradition that sits outside of time.

"The humanities are not a system for the production of positive “research results.” They are a practice of self-cultivation, or they are nothing. They proceed through the interiorization and mastery of great bodies of work that attest to the fundamental genius of human endeavor as expressed in culture. They understand culture as inescapably wrapped up with myth. But they see it as their purpose not to bust myth, nor to buttress it, but simply to wonder at it — to take it in and admire it in all its variety and depth."

The presupposition that the banking method of education is simply the purest form, the truest, of the humanities AND is the only real way to do humanities research is simply not accurate. It's merely one of many academic traditions, each of which provide benefits to knowledge production as a whole.

Every cultural studies bone in my body is aching at the horror of this op-ed. This is vapid by delineating what "true" humanists do, ahistorical by supposing an ideal concrete scholarly tradition outside economics, and anti-educational, with no pedagogical understanding of human knowledge.
