What makes farmers reluctant to talk about climate change, even though they see its effects first-hand? Can a trip to the Arctic change how you look at a small river in Co. Kerry? And why might 'community first, environment second' be the right way round? 🌍

I think those people have at some point reached the peak of stupid. That's probably due to a certain mix of isolation, loneliness, and delusion. Poor billionaires...

Morning all! Happy Monday! ☀️

If you open this site this morning and once again you're confronted with posts that reek of negativity and doom and gloom, just unfollow the person who posts them. It's as easy as that. It's not a cop-out, at this point it's self-care and almost an act of courage. 👋🏼

No worries, those AI data centres are not getting built any time soon. I mean, like, never. The simple reason is that there's no money to build them and there's no business model that would allow tenants to pay for the capacity either.

Where should the wolves live? Everyone points somewhere else. And what would be the likely impact of lowering wolves' protection status across the EU?

How many wolves is enough? Is that even the right question to ask? And will the recent lowering of wolf protection status in the EU reduce the conflict between wolves and people? Join me and @jmergeay.bsky.social in this episode as we dig into these questions. 🌍🦤🧪🦊🐺

I've been having conversations with ecologists, scientists and conservationists for over a decade. The shifting baseline syndrome was always linked to loss of species and biodiversity, yet only recently have I noticed it being used more and more in the context of nature recovery! 🌍🦤🧪

That too, it's sad to me and I'm not shying away from it - but there is a reason to why it happened! And as you can see from my exchange with Alick under this post, the reasons are not only decline but also misidentification which deserves the whole another discussion.

Scale, time, impact, cause and eventually consequences, although that remains to be seen - I'm not expect anyone to go to jail for 5 years, though.

I don't think there is any useful comparison to JSO, Tom

In many ways, Ol. The species declining to the point that even a government decided to do something about it, for a start. Losing the ability to hunt those species is another issue, and one directly related to the first. There are also secondary socio-political issues that are not fun either.

And so it is in Poland, I think I see a pattern here... 🤔

Ha! When France adopted a 0.5g/L blood alcohol limit during hunting, the Fédération Nationale des Chasseurs criticised it as 'brutale et stigmatisante'. 🤭 And of course framed it as an urban attack on rural traditions and French cultural heritage. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Mainly the last of these, regrettably.

Sad news from Poland, but the change is probably for the better, especially for the birds. Outside of farming intensification and forestry, I also blame alcohol and hubris for this sad state of affairs, if you know what I mean.

I didn't listen to him nor do I intend to. I don't think there is much nuance to the current situation with fuel prices, either. Finally, I didn't get the Liveline reference, it's a radio show that I listened to once or twice years ago. I'm sorry that you feel gaslit by public discourse, Dáiligh.

Anyone invited to a TV show is a spokesman or spokeswoman. The issue is with journalistic integrity and journalism in general, not with any group that is being spoofed by anyone claiming to be a spokesperson.

I don't know about the accuracy of those maps. Raccoon dogs are a major issue in Finland and are under active management.

Occasionally I come across a gem blog post like this one. I must start including those in my newsletter so they can reach a wider audience. Great post, Tony!
