They are usually appreciative that I point this out and acknowledge the need to have better representation.

Following my visits, I will often share a list of authors and illustrators in the area that I recommend they consider inviting in future years (usually at their request).

Whenever I visit schools, I ask librarians and PTA reps what authors they’ve invited recently and who they’re thinking of inviting next year. And as is too often the case, I point out that many / most / all are cis white men.

Note: the librarians and PTA reps have never been offended.

But I strongly encourage those in schools making decisions and planning author visits to consider greater inclusivity in those they invite into their communities.

It’s vital that kids see people who look like them (and DON’T look like them) represented on school stages.
