Amazon is regretting AI
Amazon is regretting AI YouTube video by Mo Bitar

It's a mathematical probability engine. Not a thinking machine. The fact that everyone just keeps saying it's an thinking machine when it's just a spicy predictive text machine is the biggest marketing win of the century. youtu.be/0vvVo0Um1HY?...

this is one of the most interesting things I've read about AI. Ben Affleck just sold his AI startup to Netflix for $600m. it's based on his analysis - as someone who's worked in movies for decades - of what AI is *actually useful for*. which is eg: adjusting film lighting.

I don't think young teen me, reading Breakfast of Champions for the first time, had any idea just how much that illustration would come to mind for four-decades-on me

If Bluesky engineers insist on crediting their successes to “AI” while praising vibe-coding, it’s only reasonable for the rest of us to blame their failures on “AI” and vibe-coding as well.

Yeah, they are a potential point of failure. I used PLA-CF, which looks good and also is a little more durable. And I kept the tolerances tight, so there isn't a lot of travel. But I do expect them to fail someday.

Another day, another project: created a case for an Arduino-based controller thingie. This one took a couple of tries to get it right, but like the result, especially the cut out buttons.

Funny, I don't even have to use it for AI to make me feel like I want to give up and not try

Yeah, I thought about that but

1. While the Man-Kzin universe does have force screens, it seems unlikely that there is one here
2. There's no joke if we explain why the image is correct in-universe 😉

Neither the man nor the kzin should be feeling too great…it looks like they're both exposed to a naked vacuum!

Digging deeper into the words used to market a product is always a good idea.

What does the marketer want you to believe, regardless of what the product or service really does for or to you?

It used to be when a business shut down, a cell phone store would magically pop up. Now it's AI infrastructure. 🤔

A prototype of a 3D printed wall bracket, laying on a wooden desk surface.

The print was done without supports, so there are several strands of loose material where the printer attempted to bridge a large gap over open air.

I printed this bracket with tree supports and variable layer heights in about six hours and got a very good print.

Before that, I ran off a 1 hour prototype with no supports. Given the deep overhang and six inch bridge, I am amazed it printed at all, let alone with a semi-usable result!

Continuing to clear out my personal project backlog: today's 3D print was a wall bracket I designed to hold my @raspberrypi.com 400. I've been looking forward to freeing up some desk space.

Next up is maybe some cable management.

If you think “That’s ridiculous, a weird elderly guy in robes doing something inappropriate with his hands to a comatose patient while a soldier and anachronistic nurse and crying eagle watches CAN’T be a doctor,” clearly you don’t have an HMO

In any sane country, her husband's medical care would be covered by universal healthcare, not a slim break on the hours she's able to cobble together working desperately to cover the bills.

Backwards priorities and honoring the wrong things is the American way.

I won't reshare Trump's crazy AI-generated Jesus-alike, but I've been trying to figure out the weird G.I. Joe action figures descending from above.

Really, the whole thing is bonkers.

Hungary’s people just sent a resounding message to its leaders and democracies around the world in defeating wannabe dictator Victor Orbán.

Authoritarian regimes breed corruption and lower the quality of life.

And when people stand together, they can defeat the forces of dictatorship.

I recently posted a link to my calendly with an open invitation to chat on LinkedIn.

So glad I did it. I have had some great conversations, including with former coworkers I haven't talked to in decades.

If I was running a biz again, I would absolutely have an open line.
