My jaw DROPPED when Sue said that last week!! I couldn’t hardly believe it!
The conversation was THE HIGHLIGHT of the entire course. For almost everyone that attended.
And their desire for more inclusive and softer tones and language to be used. We can’t all agree. But we can be soft and open instead of arrogant and demanding, while assuming everyone in the room believes xyz…
Because the presentation didn’t affect me personally. Yes, it rubbed me wrong. It seemed arrogant. But was it worth me mentioning? And causing a stir? It didn’t affect me personally.
But once the conversation opened up 5 people shared their personal concern.
I stepped in and voiced my gratitude for the persons bravery for sharing their concern. And that we needed to have this conversation and evaluate how we can learn and adapt and support ALL people.
Had they not spoken up I very likely wouldn’t have spoken up.
This person also bravely shared their concern that their personal connections would be at risk because they voiced their opinion.
The course director was not rude in her response. But lacked understanding, curiosity and appreciation. She simply stated facts and wanted to move on.
and stated that they were uncomfortable with a specific presentation. They had courage to stand up and respectfully and passionately share their concern, to this room of 20 people.
Did the 20 people agree with the presentation? Their silence spoke…
I attended a leadership training course this past weekend. An unplanned derailment taught me more than the original schedule would have allowed…
Quickly summed up: Speak up. Be brave. Be passionate. Be respectful. Be curious.
