Southern Poverty Law Center indicted on federal fraud charges related to past use of paid informants The Southern Poverty Law Center has been indicted on federal fraud charges related to its past use of paid informants to infiltrate extremist groups.

The apparent theory here--SPLC was defrauding donors by paying right-wing extremist org informants, and also took completely legal steps for obscuring the money trail for very obvious reasons on this totally legal thing to do--is ludicrous even by the notoriously malleable standard for wire fraud.

You can tack that on, sure. But if the fraud theory is too novel, too farfetched, too ridiculous, then it should still catch sanctions from the judge dismissing it. And the lawyers who sign bad arguments should lose their licenses. You can be bad at lawyering, but not unethical.

Wait, the dictat would return some Virginia territory to DC? Like, take-backs? Thereby stripping the residents of that territory of voting rights? … that doesn’t sound quite…

By Lincolnian he doesn’t mean “what would Lincoln do” he means partisan GOP politics. Because WWLD is burn Columbia SC etc

Maybe Lash is saying that Thomas’ unhinged partisan ramblings - fair if not generous gloss - are shameful, and the Justice should be ashamed. Or that KL thinks it’s a shame.

I mean, I know Lash is a hack who lacks integrity and a moral compass, but maybe he’s the lucky blind squirrel today.

That line from Blatt that SCOTUS wouldn’t dare overrule Rooker Feldman in an April case when no states were involved to weigh in…

She must trust them a lot more than do. Fair, she’s appeared and argued before them like 54 times more than I have.

A Gratis, Ohio police chief drove an hour to Cincinnati last week, visited 3 public schools, and claimed ICE authority to do "wellness checks." Gratis has a 287(g) agreement. Hamilton County does not. This is what 287(g) drift looks like.

a man wearing glasses and a striped shirt is looking at the camera Alt: a man wearing glasses and a striped shirt is looking at the camera - David Herman as Michael Bolton in Office Space

To bring forward nuance: a symbol being liked by racists doesn’t force everyone else to abandon personal or alternate meanings. When a symbol has become solely identified with the hate, that’s when it must be dropped. Prior to that, it’s like the Office Space meme

What percent of the working population would you say is you, vs not-you?

Now me, I figure I’m not necessarily representative. Knowledge-based work that can be done partly remotely but depends on human trust? Anyway. If it’s not about you it wasn’t for you.

Why, because she’s 3% lower than the lead Dem? What if they dropped instead?

Not a Porter Stan. Just wondering why it should be this Dem and not that one that should quit. California should fix its bad Top Two primary. Meaning stop doing that.

I’m not saying “you got this.” I am saying, we get to say how it goes.
Double up on self care, if you need to. Lean on folks. I got back to therapy, said No more often, have started to learn what it is to be in the Club: nobody tells you that there is one, but lots of folks find they have joined.

Don’t get it twisted. Immigrants belong here. @aila.org is putting in the blood, sweat, and tears to keep that promise.

yep. they say it's nonlinear.

My mom passed in October and I haven't been doubled over or weeping so much. Some of the sting has come off, as we begin to mark events and anniversaries without her. Sometimes I get happy reminders.

Good luck and be gentle on you. Grieving is communal/ personal.

*yet

Also, there are plenty of messaging bills with truly childish names. Some of them never get a second sponsor. It is WILD what adults in Congress will put their name on.

1) yes 2) of course but also 3) govt is not doing something outright illegal by asking. Yet. It does seem wild to require people to be public when they don’t want to be. Might be unsafe to do so. Dangerous even. Not just because of criminals, but because being public is risky for vulnerable grps.

It’s a thought. “Wrong when decided, wrong now, and there’s simply no need for a new vehicle to be brought and appealed and reconsidered. Past court ruled; we hereby overrule.”

I was walking around in despair after Election Day. Learning how many incumbent parties were wiped out that year, and that Harris may have outperformed in the face of unhappiness about inflation, allowed me to refocus. A lot of people were mad about costs and punished the D side for it.
