I think about that place a lot as I get older and I realize that, for an adventure, fantasy and sci-fi obsessed, treasure hunting weird kid with few friends, that cave gave refuge from so much more than bad weather.

As a kid growing up on movies like Indiana Jones and The Goonies, this was an epic find. I spent countless hours every summer in and around that mystery cave. It gave me endless curiosity, a million different imaginary adventures and, on more than one occasion, refuge from a surprise thunderstorm.

Lots of people knew about the cave but no one knew who built it or why. One of my high school teachers was a local historian who knew more about the area than anyone else. I asked him about what was in the pasture, he said he knew of the cave and that it was old but that was all the info he had.

More than half a mile in and roughly in the center of that pasture was a manmade stack stone cave built into the side of a hill. The farmer that owned the land put a barbed wire fence around the whole thing to keep the cows out but did little to prevent me from playing in it.
