File on 4 Investigates - Are white working class girls falling behind? - BBC Sounds When it comes to school attendance and attainment are some girls falling behind?

www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

All girls’ attainment is falling, but white working class girls’ attainment is falling faster. This is alarming.

I think that there’s a lot to be said about the culture and politics of the 90s music scene.

The cover of The Spick and The Span by Pil Van Martin. The cover shows two characters in overalls in the foreground. One has long wavy dark hair and is wielding a mop. The other is short let with blue skin and pointy ears, holding a spray bottle. Behind them is a frog riding a flying broomstick.

For podcast reasons I’m re-reading this delightful book. It is really good fun, and it pokes the Terry Pratchett parts of my brain.

Good morning! I’m really enjoying a re-read of Mossflower by Brian Jacques for podcast reasons. I picked up @thecallya.bsky.social’s new novel at EasterCon, and am going to be reading it on my commute. It’s called The Sword Garden.

You wouldn't trust JD Vance with a tenner to go to Pret and get your lunch, would you. You wouldn't ask him to watch your kids for a couple of hours either. Just a ghastly, hollow marionette fashioned out of elbow skin and broken toilet seats.

Keeping my fingers crossed for Hungary today, and hoping that this election starts turning the tide against ultranationalist politics in Europe.

Ep 51: A snake out of water with Emily Tesh | Fantasy Book Swap Emily’s choice: Briar’s Book/ The Healing in the Vine by Tamora Pierce Ali’s choice:  A Snake falls to Earth by Darcy Little Badger EasterCon- the annual British fan-run Science Fiction and Fantasy convention Emily was on a panel celebrating the centenary of Anne McCaffrey Scholastic Book Fairs are still going! Tamora Pierce’s books have been challenged and removed from libraries. Attempts at censoring reading are rising in the UK. If you want to read to support authors, please bear in mind that LGBTQ+ authors and authors of colour are more likely to be under threat of having their books  removed from libraries and schools. See the list of books removed from Lowry Academy in Manchester where a librarian has lost her job and is unlikely to work with young people again. For more information on the effects of book banning on authors, listen to this episode of Our Opinions Are Correct with Maggie Tokuda-Hall. Food in SFF- Dr Fiona Moore cooks recipes from SFF cook books so we don’t have to. She found this recipe for cherry tarts inspired by Alanna: The First Adventure. The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones has been nominated for several awards. Stephen Graham Jones is also a Native American (Blackfeet) author who writes mostly in horror. I also really enjoyed Monoquill Blackgoose’s To Shape a Dragon’s Breath. Darren Chetty’s ‘You can’t say that! Stories are supposed to be about white people!’ from Nikesh Shukla (Ed) The Good Immigrant. This book was published by Unbound, which has collapsed. The amazing Petronella Breinburg, who was born in Suriname, not the Caribbean. Thank you as always for listening, sharing and engaging!

New Fantasy Book Swap episode with @emilytesh.net! I have realised that I left Emily’s social media and Eight Days of Diana Wynne Jones from the show notes. Will correct as soon as possible. alibaker68.podbean.com/e/ep-51-a-sn...
